30 Dec 10 Boston Celtics, Playoff Rotation General Play

Elsa/Getty ImagesThe Celtics Have gone 3-3 on there 6 game home-stand with an impressive 3 quarter showing against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 4th quarter the Celtics were outscored 32-19 but it was down to the fact they wern't moving on offense they were resorting to their jump shooting and the cavaliers were rebounding and breaking on the Boston defense and with the best player in the NBA finishing the cavaliers smelled blood and LeBron was in "Attack mode" to quote the 6'8'' 250lb offensive JuggernautRay Houston Texans jersey
Allen was immense he shot the ball very well and stretched the lead the telling point was the fact Nate Robinson didn't log a single second which is interesting but i did feel nate was due a dose of DNP hes been very erratic with his shooting and has put his team in a hole at times unlike J.R Smith he can't get to the rim (though he is the dunk champion) and he resorts to jump-shots all the time he is yet to log a 20 point performance for the Celtics and he is drifting into not being part of Doc's Play-Off rotation.I feel this game mean't alot to the Celtics for one reason in particular if the cavaliers went to win this game and the final games they would tie the 2007-2008 Celtics record of 66-16 which is one of the best records in NBA historyMarquis Daniels is another underachiever like he said he was not brought in to be offensive player he was brought in to defend but his defense numbers are sporadic and to me if he was brought in for defensive duties why is he shooting the corner 3 a shot hes yet to hit by the way and I've watched pretty much all of Celtics basketball The Celtics have lost 13 games in which they have had 10 point leads that puts them up there with Memphis if they lost none of those games they would have a record of Indianapolis Colts jersey
and 15 better than cleveland's and 17 and were very close to losing a 20 point game going into the 4th quarter what must be stressed is the Celtics must start playing 48 minute basketballThe only plus is Milwaukee have lost Bogut to an injury and he is out indefinitely he was the guy who single-handedly outplayed Kendrick Perkins in my eyes the only Center to have done that all seasonThe Guys who Get my vote for the playoff rotation other than the starters are Rasheed Wallace,Tony Allen,Glen Davis and Michael Finley with a reduced role for Shelden Williams, I just feel when Nate comes on everyone tunes into his show but his show is on the verge of being cancelled because of poor rating hes a crowd pleaser a sideshow act if you will he doesn't help the team in anyway offenisvely or defensively hes not a guy to go to in to manufacture points the only good he is to the team is a ball handler for rajon when hes getting his rest if he wants to be part of the Celtics team he must do his bit and that means being more of a team player he is key to the second string i feel rasheed has been far more consistent as of late but is still struggling with his mouthI Think the Celtics should make a run at Manu Ginoblli come close-season he's a ball handler and a great shooter it makes sense for the celtics to go after him especially if they keep and re-sign ray Allen consistent help off the bench will be a must and if the Celtics can sign ray Allen to a cheaperJacksonville Jaguars jersey
deal and opt to allow scalabrine and Nate Robinson to to sign to other teams the Celtics will have money to sign manu with is 10 million dollar salary though i do feel the Celtics will muster a way to sign D-wade but that is another article for another day

29 Dec 10 Toronto Raptors Report: Season Review

Sam Greenwood/Getty ImagesThe Raptors season can be summed up into two wordsonly if. Only if this team could have kept play well after the all star break, only if Chris Bosh didn't have to get injured twice in the stretch run, only if Chris Bosh didn't miss that lay-up against Golden State, only if Bryan Colangelo didn't sign Hedo Turkoglu to a huge contract. Only if. The list goes on and on.The Raptors missed the playoffs for the second straight year, and its disappointing. Not because they missed the playoffs, but because this team had so much Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
potential. There was a point where everything was going well, they were in fifth and had so much momentum going into the all star break. Then disaster struck. This team was in complete free fall and Chris Bosh's huge year (contract year) was gone to waste. They missed the playoffs by a mere game. If somebody asked you at the all star break which team were most likely to come in ninth, it most definitely wouldn't have been the Raptors. But, they finished 40-42, and in ninth place.Defense was the problem this year for the Raptors. There were stretches where they were determined, and they actually played some pretty good defense. But for the most part, the defense was inconsistent and pathetic. Too bad.Hedo Turkoglu was one of the biggest busts of the season, but hey, its not his Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
fault that Colangelo offered him such a huge deal. Triano isn't the one who should be losing his job this off-season, it's Colangelo. Every year, he keeps rebuilding, but he can't seem to realize that his approach isn't working. Bringing in soft Euros, and having a huge ego like you know it all in this league just doesn't work. The sooner he accepts that Andrea Bargnani will never be a tough centre, the sooner this team evolves. There are many questions coming up this off-season, and the main one will be if Chris Bosh stays. I believe if Bosh goes, Colangelo is out of a job. If he lures Bosh back in, he's safe. But so what?We have the same roster as last year, there will be similar results. Maybe slight improvement of the young guys like Weems and DeRozan, but will it make a huge difference. Probably Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
not. Colangelo needs to get some real help for Bosh. Trade Turkoglu, bring in Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson. That's a real team. The million dollar question this offseason will be: is Chris Bosh going to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors? Well, it's more like a $23 million question. I guess we'll have to wait, hope and pray.I guess this season was an improvement from last season?GO RAPS!

28 Dec 10 Firing Vinny Del Negro Was the Right Move

Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesIt was the right move for the Chicago Bulls to relinquish Vinny Del Negro of his coaching duties. Del Negro just could not cut it during his brief two-year stint. He was strategically overmatched on many nights by his contemporaries, failed to consistently place his players in a position to succeed, and had a difficult time making in-game adjustments. Something one would expect from someone learning in the midst of their first ever coaching journey at any level of organized basketball. Team vice president Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
John Paxson has made a lot of undesirable decisions in the front-office, but firing Del Negroafter the head scratching hirehad to be done. Del Negro was just not ready. Combined with a middling roster that could not overcome his inexperience spelled doom from the beginning. Sure, the former NBA guard led Chicago to back-to-back playoff seasons in his only two seasons and amassed a respectable 82-82 record in the process even with an inexperienced roster, injuries, and trades along the way. But with Del Negro at the helm, the Bulls were far from championship contenders. The bottom half of the Eastern Conference has been average at worst for several seasons. So making the postseason was nothing to write home about. If the NBA were the NCAA Tournament, the Bulls would have been Arkansas Pine Bluff or Morgan State. In the 2008-09 season, Chicago finished with the 15th best record in the league. 2009-10 was no different record wise, but Del Negro's bunch had the 17th best record. Not exactly on the path to a conference title. Taking the then NBA champion Boston Celtics to the limit in a memorable seven-game first-round series was believed to be push the Bulls needed to propel themselves to at least into the upper tier of the Eastern Conference. How much better could the team be with a healthy Luol Deng to go along with John Salmons, Brad Miller, Joakim Noah, and Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose who all played well in the playoffs? Not much better. Although Rose ultimately became an NBA All-Star, Noah improved dramatically and rookie Taj Gibson became a nice revelation, the group was still stuck in basketball mediocrity hovering either around or a few games below .500 for much of the season. Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
The offense still was elementary, predictable and featured little ball movement. Sure, James Johnson, who was drafted ahead of Gibson, did not develop his game at all. Then there was Jarrett Jack of the Toronto Raptors tying his shoes at center court with Del Negro and his players window dressing. Blowing a 35-point second half lead to the lowly Sacramento Kings did not help matters much either, as well as dropping a pair of games to the win allergic New Jersey Nets. The press can speculate all they want about the March 30 Del Negro-Paxson scuffle leading to Tuesday's firing. But it was Del Negro's coaching inability that sealed his fate. Should Bulls fans trust Paxson and GM Gar Forman to attract a quality head coach in addition to signing one of the possible franchise changing free agents this summer? Considering the front office botched a deal that would have sent Pau Gasol to Chicago in exchange for Deng, signing Ben Wallace to a $60 million deal in a weak 2006 free agent class, trading the draft rights of Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
LaMarcus Aldridge to the Portland Trailblazers for Tyrus Thomas, and blowing the chance at securing a veteran NBA coach after Scott Skiles was fired, you make the call. One of the few decisions Paxson got right was turning in an index card with Rose's name on it making him the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Seven years of running in place in the Paxson era has gotten the Bulls in rebuild mode for the umpteenth time. Here's hoping this blueprint wor

27 Dec 10 Who Needs Puppets When You Have Celtics and Lakers?

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesThanks to a rejuvenated Kevin Garnett, we can dowithout a pairpuppets and a possibleKobe/LeBron matchup becausewe'll be getting the next best thing: Boston vs. L.A. No disrespect to Orlando and Phoenix, but let's be serious, it's all about the Lakers and Celtics this year, again. It's typically out of my character to just write teams off in the middle of a series but why not? Everybody else is doing it. I couldn't wait to get a crack at previewing this series, with so many twists and plots, it should be another great one.So if Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
Boston and L.A. do eventually matchup for the 12th time in NBA Finals history, things should be pretty interesting. Despite the historic brilliance of both clubs, the Celtics/Lakers Finals series has been pretty one-sided so far. Boston owns a 9-2 edge in the series with their last victory coming in 2008 when visions of a Boston comeback, a Boston blowout and Doc Rivers being doused with Gatorade defined the series. But things could be different this time around. Or could they? After all, Pau Gasol is a better player now, Kobe Bryant is still Kobe Bryant and the rest of the Lakers are more experienced and better equipped to scrap with a rough and rugged Boston squad. But Boston is also sporting a different look these days. Gone is the dominance of the "Big Three" and in is the superstardom of All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo.Rondo's emergence has continued the Celtics' image of a lock and block defensive unit while upping the tempo and transforming them into a fast-paced drive and dish team. The Lakers have had a history of being openly victimized by athletic point guards and a new defensive game plan will have to be in order for a Finals rematch. Bryant exclusively locked up with Rondo in the '08 Finals in an effort to give him a rest on defense and out of Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
chasing Boston sniper Ray Allen off screens. But Rondo was nowhere near the scorer in '08 that he is now, so Bryant typically gave him an open cushion and the green light to launch jumpers. While perimeter shooter still isn't one of Rondo's strengths, it would be a huge mistake for the Lakers to put Bryant on him again should the teams meet. Rondo has stamina to burn while Bryant, 31, is nowhere near the thoroughbred he used to be.L.A. will be in a tough position regardless of which direction they look to because putting Derek Fisher on Rondo will be just an open invitation to the rim for the Celtics point guard. There'll be a lot of clashes in this possible series to keep note of; Ron Artest vs. Paul Pierce and Gasol vs. Kevin Garnett will both weigh heavily on the outcome but Boston doesn't have a man to check Lamar Odom off the bench and with the way Odom is playing right now, the Celtics will definitely have to key on him.Everything about this series screams television viewership records from the names on the front ofReebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
jerseys to the ones on the back. No other teams are hotter right now than the Lakers and Celtics. Los Angeles has turned into a scoring machine while Boston has been the premiere defensive unit of the postseason. It shouldn't be long now, just have to wait for Orlando and Phoenix to lie down and let history take its course. The last two NBA Champions set to slug it out in what could be the last hurrah for both clubs.Kobe vs. LeBron would've been nice but who needs puppets when you have the Celtics and Lakers?

26 Dec 10 Teams Must Be Regretting Not Signing Allen Iverson This Season

The Boston Celtics are headed back to the NBA Finals and will probably meet the Lakers for one of the best series in NBA history. The Celtics have dominated everyone in their path with their amazing defense and they just stole the hearts out of all the teams they played.Fans were predicting a Orlando Magic and New York Giants jersey
Cleveland Cavaliers Eastern Conference Finals, but the Celtics dominated both teams and took the heart right out of them. All players on the teams gave up including the stars Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Vince Carter. The Celtics took advantage of that and punished both teams, now LeBron James is going to leave Cleveland and the Magic maybe done with Vince Carter too. These team's owners are now being blamed for not having players on the roster that cared and that brought it every night. It is not only the Magic and Cavaliers who just lost their drive there are other teams that could have done well but lost heart and stopped caring, teams like the Raptors, Heat and Spurs. Now that the guys running these teams look back at the names on the 2009 free agency they should be ashamed of themselves for not signing Allen Iverson.First of all, forget about the fact that he has more heart than any player in the league; I just want to say that other than Dwight Howard and LeBron James in this years Eastern Conference Finals, I did not see one player who is better than Allen Iverson. The Magic and Cavalier respective supporting casts managed no better than the Allen Iverson we saw in Philadelphia for 25 games, the one who put up 14 points per game and 29 minutes per game, and the one that was forced to run the most structured basketball offense in the league. The Magic and Cavaliers blew it.Both teams had the chance to sign a legend, a first ballot Hall Of Famer who is hands down one of the 25 greatest players to ever play the game; they had a chance to sign a guy who wouldn't give up like Mo Williams, Antwan Jamison, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis did when their teams needed them; they had a chance to sign a guy who could go off for 30 points any game and if given the minutes and touches could go for 25 a night. These teams were delusional when Iverson was a free agent, treating him like he a criminal that would rob and kill when he was in the locker room, worried that he would destroy team chemistry. They forgot that he is one of the greatest of all-time and has never choked or broken down in pressure. Teams were paying attention to what Iverson was off the courteven though that part of him is blown out of New York Jets jersey
proportionand they weren't paying attention to what he could have done for their teams on the basketball court. The Magic and Cavaliers could have called up Iverson before the series started and he would have laced up his shoes and brought more effort than any other player on the team. He could have even won them a game or two and maybe even the series. But in the off-season these teams wanted Iverson to come off the bench for some reason. Well what did the Magic and Cavalier starting lineups do when they needed them? What did the Mario Chalmers do for the Heat? What about the Spurs starting SG?How about the Raptors weren't they supposed to be a No. 4 seed this season? Were their guards better than Iverson? Reports say Hedo Turkoglu wants out now. How about the Clippers, who wanted Iverson to come off the bench? What about Mike Conley? The Grizzlies didn't want Iverson starting over him so they released him. Were the 12-70 Nets too good for Allen Iverson? Weird how one of the worst teams in NBA history thought they didn't need one of the greatest players in NBA history. The Knicks passed on Iverson after he was put on the waivers and that didn't turn out too well. What did Detroit do without Allen Iverson? They used his contract to get Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanuevaand the team finished 27-55, much worse than last year. But Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva didn't have cornrows and tattoos and weren't cultural icons, so their careers weren't destroyed by the media. The championship contenders aren't the only ones that blew it by not signing Iverson. The list of teams goes on and on. Teams that didn't even look at Iverson in free agency blew it. They had a chance to get a guy who was hungry at proving the world wrong and if was given 36 minutes per game, the touches and shots, he could have been a top five scorer in the league.Miami, Toronto, New Jersey, Memphis, San Antonio, Indiana, Charlotte, New York are teams that blew it by not picking up Iverson when the had the chance. The funniest part about all this is that Iverson was only asking for a one-year $5 million deal and teams still passed. That price is nothing in the NBA, especially if you have Iverson on the rosterhe will sell $5 million worth of jerseys in just two months.Iverson would never quit on his team like the starters on playoff teams like the Magic, Spurs, Cavaliers and Heat did this year.I will do a breakdown of some starting guards in the league and Oakland Raiders jersey
compare them to what Iverson did this season. Again, I am comparing them to an Allen Iverson who didn't play basketball for six months after the Detroit fallout, went into Memphis training camp as rusty as can be, tore his hamstring, and came back to play three games for Memphis and then retired for a month. In that month, God knows what Iverson may have done. Then he came back to the Sixers even rustier than when he arrived in Memphis, had one workout and played 37 minutes against Denver. Later in the season he learned he had an arthritic knee.By the way, he played in Eddie Jordan's Princeton Offense, which for those of you that don't know, tgoes something like this: pass the ball, wait for a screen, fill the spot and set a screen, wait for a screen and then maybe touch the ball.Other than Detroit, all the offenses Iverson played in went like this: give the ball to Allen and get out of the way. He played just 29 minutes per game and took just 11 shots a night. So here it is; Allen Iverson compared to other starting guards in the league. Allen Iverson: 13.8 ppg, 4.0 apg, 2.8 rpg, in just 29 mpgOther Guards:Anthony Parker, SG, Cavaliers: 8.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.3 apg, 30 mpgEven an injured, rusty Allen Iverson could have helped the Cavaliers more than Anthony Parker.Jason Terry, SG, Mavericks: 12.7 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 29 mpgOh, look: Allen also outplayed Jason Terry, who wasn't able to get the Mavericks as far as they were supposed to go in the playoffs.Mario Chalmers, PG, Heat: 10.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.6 apgThis guy is the reason Iverson wasn't brought to Miami. Looks like Allen outplayed him, too. A back court of D-Wade and AI would be amazing, and would give teams fits. Too bad Pat Riley decided to pass.Courtney Lee, G, Nets: 12.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.7 apg. 34 mpgIf Iverson was playing over this guy on the Nets, he would lead the league in scoring and he would probably win 25 games for this team himself. Instead the Nets finished 12-70.Chris Duhon, G, Knicks: 7.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.6 apg, 31 mpgTracy McGrady, G, Knicks: 8.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.3 apgYes, T-Mac was injured but so was AI and he outplayed him. Chris Duhon is the guy they thought they should stick with when Allen was put on the waivers by MemphisAI would get 25 in his sleep in coach D'Antoni's high-octane offense in New York, and would probably be able to lead the Knicks to the playoffs. Since he was going to "ruin team chemistry," the Knicks passed.LeBron, Bosh and Wade all want to go to New York but the Knicks have no names on the roster that would help lure them in; if they had Allen Iverson on the roster it would be a guy who has had a better career than all three players and they would be Knicks on July 1.Jameer Nelson, PG, Magic: 12.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.4 apgIf Iverson was on the Magic he would have done more than Jameer did this season and would be playing with heart every game and wouldn't give up when there was pressure. Just having him there Philadelphia Eagles jersey
would be an inspiration. In Orlando's system Iverson probably wouldn't have a problem getting 20 a night.TJ Ford, PG, Pacers: 10.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.8 apgEarl Watson, PG, Pacers: 7.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.1 apgIverson outplayed these guys, and the Pacers would have at least a 20-points-per-game scorer in Iverson. He and Danny Granger would probably be able to lead the Pacers to the playoffs. What was Indiana thinking when they chose these guys over Allen?Beno Udrih, G, Pacers: 12.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.7 apgAllen out played Udrih as well and a Tyreke and Iverson back court would be amazing to watch. Not to mention effective.George Hill, G, Spurs: 12.4 ppg, 2.9 apg, 2.6 rpgIverson would have been a perfect fit for the Spurs and would have them in the Western Conference Finals neck and neck with the Lakers. But the Spurs passed on Iverson and chose this guy. Don't give me the "Hill is younger" excuse, because at the end of the day, it's about who gets it doneand AI outplayed him. Plus, the Spurs are already old... what is one young, inexperienced guard going to do for them?Jose Calderon, G, Raptors: 10.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 5.9 apgJarret Jack, G, Raptors: 11.4 ppg, 5.0 apg, 2.7 rpgDeMar DeRozan, G, Raptors: 8.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.7 apgIverson would have been the perfect fit for Toronto. A Bosh and AI combo would lock up a fourth seed by All-Star break, and Allen would probably be averaging at least 20 points a night.AI, Turkoglu, and Bosh would be a deadly combo come playoff time. If fans hated Vince Carter because of his lack of heart they would have loved Allen because of his style, the kind locals love. He would bring the passion, excitement and heart every night to the ACC. Brian Colangelo should have thought about Allen very hard.Mike Conley, G, Grizzlies: 12.0 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 5.3 apgThe Grizzlies chose this scrub over Iverson, which may have led to his decision to departfrom the team. The Grizzlies may have made the playoffs had they started AI and the city of Memphis would have loved Iverson. Too bad the Grizzlies let him go like that.Raymond Felton, G, Bobcats: 11.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 5.0 apgAllen Iverson was a Bobcat for about a day when he and Brown agreed to have the reunion all Iverson fans wanted. Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Iverson would give the Bobcats that scorer and he certainly outplayed Felton. It probably wouldn't be like 2001 but it would have been something good. But Michael Jordan said no to Iverson and the deal broke down.So there it is; Allen outplayed so many starting guards this season, and again, this was an injured and rusty Iverson who was running the most structured offense in the league, taking 11 shots a night and playing just 29 mpg.Iverson could have helped contenders get to the Finals and maybe even win it all, and he could have helped other teams (like the Raptors) become contenders.A lot of teams must be regretting not taking Allenand they even had two chances to sign him because he was a free agent once again when Memphis released him.If an unhealthy, rusty Iverson in a situation as there was in Philadelphia can outplay these guys, then imagine what he can do in the right situation when healthy.Iverson will be a free agent once again, and some are saying he will return and others are saying he won't. People have been all over Twitter saying that they saw Allen in clubs and he is telling people that he is working out everyday and wants to return. These owners and GM's across the league must keep in mind that Allen could have helped them a lot, and they screwed up by not signing him once. And more offers will come this year because he proved he isn't a distraction and a chemistry-killer like some people make him out to be.This is what Nets President and GM, Ed Stefanski, had to say recently when asked about the Iverson signing:"The impact he had on the locker room, the spark he provided, playing good basketball and the way he blended in was good for the team."When he got here, he was terrific. People ask me all the time if I would do it again. I tell them I would in a second. He was good for our team, and no one's career got thrown down while he was here." Teams need to compare their guards to Iverson and they will realize that even an unhealthy Iverson is better than a lot of starting guards in the league.Iverson should stop acting stubborn, offer himself to teams, and ask coaches for workouts to prove he can still play. He should start working out everyday to get his explosiveness back and he will be fine. San Diego Chargers jersey
This summer, when all the young superstars are signed and the second tier guys are signed, the guy with the best career in the 2010 free agency pool will be leftand he is the "Answer" Allen Iverson. And he can be the answer to a lot of teams next season.

25 Dec 10 Boston Celtics Courting SHAQ-Tastrophe!

Elsa/Getty ImagesThe Celtics are courting SHAQ-tastrophe.Last season NBA Finals Runner Ups are flaunting with failure as the Celtics have signed 38 year-old NBA All Star Shaquille ONeal to a two year contract. In this coming NBA season, look for a series of SHAQ-tastrophies beginning with a kelly green clad sputtering Carolina Panthers jersey
Big Diesel who will be lumbering down the parquet court of Boston TD Bank North Garden.Already limited in their fast break, an aged Celtics team has added the glacier quick Shaq to their squadcertain to tether itself further to the immovable foundation of Boston iconic John Hancock Building. At first, watch the plodding Planet Cryptonite schmooze teammates with his signature shuck and jive and influence his new Boston friends with a feigned team-first philosophy. However, ONeal game has always been Shaq vs .. well, everybody else...cause it always been all about 71 Chicago Bears jersey
and 335 lbs. of Shaq and his monumental ego! Then, just wait til December when Shaq Daddy wants more touches and disheartened guards like Rajon Rondo and Nate Robinson howl at the horrific sight of this Big Fella hampering their way to the hoop.Worse yet, wait until February when the original Celtic Big Three of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett have had enough hubris from the Hulking Ham in the Hub City hoping to become a Cozy Celtic Quartet. But that won ever happen.Expect ONeal to exit Boston after just one season or maybe even sooner. History documents his less than magical departure from Orlando, his petty parting from the Lakers, Shaq scorched separations from the Suns and Heat and his cavalier departure from Cleveland.Despite my prognostications, here hoping the Celtics Cincinnati Bengals jersey
will salvage this season by muzzling this megalomaniac and sparingly utilizing his waning talents. Otherwise, Coach Doc Rivers will be courting a sure SHAQ-tastrophe with the NBA former Superman and now sputtering Big Diesel.Straight talk. No static.MIKE;thee American made voice of sports.

24 Dec 10 Evan Turner: How Early Can Philadelphia 76ers Fans Panic?

Apparently, the Panic Button has been hit here in Philly about Evan Turner. Some of the writers who frequent Daily News Live have been skeptical about Turner so far. There have been a few rumors that Doug Collins doesn't like him that much. People are wondering how he Chicago Bears jersey
and Iguodala are going to coexist.Probably the worst of the worst is when Bill Simmons, in his recent article, compared him to Adam Morrison. That might be the worst insult anyone can give a rookie."Man, I wish we got Wall instead."Needless to say, the common Sixers fan is ready to push the Panic Button on Evan Turner. The Sixers and Turner's preseason play have backed up these rumblings. He is shooting only 30% from the field, averaging only 10 PPG, 3.6 APG and 2.8 turnovers per game."We should have taken Cousins."Cousins has been dominating down in Sacramento, while Turner is struggling in Philly. Philadelphia is notoriously tough on their athletes too. We aren't pessimistic, just cautiously optimistic."He can't shoot, and he's not athletic enough."Here is why I am not ready to panic yet. Last year in the first month of the season, Jrue Holiday was coming off the bench while Ty Lawson was filling up some stat sheets in the up-tempo Nuggets system, and people began wondering why we didn't take Cincinnati Bengals jersey
Lawson, who was proven, instead of Jrue, who was raw talent. Now Holiday is our most valuable commodity, perhaps the only player the 76ers wouldn't trade, unless they were offered something amazing."Why did we take Turner when we have Iggy and no center?"It is tough to come to a new team as rookie, especially a bad team, and fit right in. Unless you are ball-dominant, like a Tyreke Evans, even good rookies don't explode on the scene right away.It is also tough when the teams supposed best player plays basically the same position as you. When ET gels with Holiday, the Sixers will have a real future. The main reason why it is too early to give up Turner is that he is tough. While other players miss half an NBA season with an inner ear infection (Hansbrough), or cry on the court (Morrison), this man broke his back, yet returned within a few weeks. He came back and carried his team to a 2-seed in the NCAA tournament, and clearly was their only true prospect.Toughness cannot be taught. Cleveland Browns jersey
A consistent jump shot and chemistry can. Other Sixers fans are ready to panic, and have been saying negative things like the quotes above, but not me.I don't expect Turner to win Rookie of the Year, but i expect ET and Jrue to be leading this team into the future by the end of the year. As a Sixers fan, it's our only hope to get out of the basement, and throw away the Panic Button.

23 Dec 10New Jersey Nets-Denver Nuggets: Nets Hang Tough, Can't Pull Out Win in Fourth

(AP Photo/Chris Schneider)In the closing seconds of the New Jersey Nets' Saturday night game against the Denver Nuggets, with the team trailing by two, Brook Lopez missed what would have been a game-tying layup. The Nets would not score again as the Nuggets eventually won 107-103 after Carmelo Anthony hit a pair of free throws.Lopez had 20 points on the night while going 9-for-21 from the field, although he did not visit the free throw line until there were about three minutes left in the game.In what has been a bit of Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
a theme so far this year, Lopez repeatedly settled for outside shots and failed to make strong moves at the rim.On his missed lay up near the end of the game, it appeared he could have gone up and tried to jam it home, which could have possibly led to an and-one situation. Instead he tried to bank it off glass and missed the shot. He's still in the process of learning some things and this game will provide him with more to work on.In a possible audition for his future team, Derrick Favors had a nice game, going 4-of-6 for 14 points while collecting eight rebounds. The Nets as a team had seven players in double figures as everyone who saw extended minutes had decent, but not great, games. The team shot 40 percent, failing to cash in on several opportunities by missing open shots or not finishing at the Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
basket.New Jersey was finishing up a four-game roadtrip in this one. They went 1-3 on the trip and will surely be kicking themselves for each loss as they had chances to win all four games, but failed in their late-game execution. That is what separates the good teams from the mediocre ones. For Denver, Anthony finished 11-of-25 for 28 points. He also had eight rebounds and five assists.Nene added in 22 points and eight rebounds of his own. Ty Lawson and J.R. Smith had 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Nuggets shot 48 percent from the field and 54 percent from three, displaying the firepower that has made them one of the elite offensive teams in the league. Not to be overly optimistic, but New Jersey can still feel good about themselves despite this and other recent losses as Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
these could very well be the types of games they find ways to win in the second half of the season. We will just have to patient and let the team grow a bit more. The Nets have the next two days off before returning home to host Atlanta on Tuesday.

NBA Free Agency: It's Time for Dwyane Wade to Call Chicago Home Again

Elsa/Getty ImagesLast week, basketball fans were led to believe that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade would make an announcement concerning their playing careers by July 5. That day has come and gone. Now it seems that no announcement will be made by either man until WednesdayReebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
or Thursday at the earliest.Entering the free agent process, most felt Wade was a mortal lock to remain in Miami, while most felt James would end up anywhere but Cleveland. Now it appears James' most likely move is to return to Cleveland, but Wade's final destination seems up for more debate.Miami has done a wonderful job freeing up enough money for Wade and two other big-name free agents. However, with Joe Johnson and Amar'e Stoudemire agreeing to new contracts, that's two potential key members of Miami's plan off the table.Chris Bosh could still sign with the Heat, but he doesn't seem interested in signing for anything but the max contract. The Heat and Raptors could arrange a sign-and-trade deal, but that would leave Miami without Michael Beasley. Although Beasley may not be a star yet, he's too talented to give up—no matter what the return may be.Carlos Boozer and David Lee could both head to Miami, and that would give the Heat an excellent frontcourt, and plenty of muscle to protect Wade. But Boozer's injury history could deflate a realistic run at the title, and does anyone think Lee is deserving of a max deal?Chicago became a viable option for Wade, who met with the team multiple times in the Windy City. It is a very good fit for Wade.In fact, it's the perfect fit. And the choice he should make to ensure his place in the history books.Chicago is home for Wade. He grew up in Chicago during a time when the entire world's basketball focus was on the Bulls and Michael Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
Jordan. Wade's family is still in the city. Being close to them should be a priority during his current divorce proceedings. From a purely selfish point of view, signing with Chicago also makes good sense in reference to his divorce. A contract of $30 million less with the Bulls means $30 million less in potential losses in a divorce hearing. While that factor may not be at the top of his list of things to consider, it should be on the list nonetheless.Wade, not James, is the perfect fit for the Bulls. Derrick Rose would have to compromise his play-making ability with James on the court, while Rose would have greater freedom with Wade on the perimeter. The Bulls would still have enough flexibility to either sign another high-priced free agent, or make a trade for Bosh.Giving up Luol Deng or Joakim Noah for Bosh would be well worth it for the Bulls. A 'Big Four' of Rose, Wade, Bosh, and Noah or Deng would be the odds-on favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. With apologies to the Celtics and their fans, the big three will be a year older, not a year better. The 'Chicago Four' will all be in their prime years and poised to bring another banner to the United Center.Wade may not have the MVP trophies like James, but he does have a championship ring that James so deeply desires. If things stay as they have been, James will likely pass him eventually. Going to the Bulls will give Wade the advantage for the better part of their careers. In fact, Wade could come closer in comparison to Jordan than any current player.Wade, not Shaquille O'Neal, was the primary reason for the Heat's championship run in 2006. Kobe owes three of his five championship rings in large part to O'Neal, and Wade could easily lead the Bulls to conquer the Lakers next June.Dade County has temporarily become Wade County, but for Wade, there is no disputing that Chicago is home. James could become an adopted son, bringing glory back to the city, but Wade is already a son of the city. And he could Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
become every bit the giant that Jordan had been in the 90's.Chicago winters compared to what Wade has been experiencing on South Beach may make Miami an irresistible decision, but raising the O'Brien trophy in Millennium Park would make all the cold winter nights worth it.To read more by Jesse Motiff, click here .

Cliff Lee Signing With Phillies Leaves Yankees in Deep Trouble

Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesCliff Lee is headed back to Philly, and the Yankees appear headed for a second place finish in the American League East. Lee agreed to a five-year contract worth $120 million with a vesting option for a sixth season, according to MLB.com. The Yankees reportedly offered the free-agent a seven-year deal worth $154 million, and the Rangers even put more money on the table than the Phillies, so clearly this decision wasn't about just dollars and cents. Lee spent the final two months of the 2009 regular season with Philadelphia before leading the team Cleveland Browns jersey
to the World Series and, by all accounts, enjoyed his time there. New York general manager Brian Cashman clearly did all he could financially to get Lee in pinstripes, but whether he could have done anything else may never be known. This has been a disastrous offseason for the Bombers, who struggled through a messy negotiation with free-agent Derek Jeter before finally inking the captain, lost out on a half-hearted attempt to sign Carl Crawford when the Red Sox swooped in at the last minute, and now, fell short in the Lee sweepstakes. So where do the Yanks go from here? The projected rotation currently includes ace CC Sabathia, the young Phil Hughes, a shaky A.J. Burnett and—gulp—Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre? Assuming Andy Pettitte returns, how should the Yankees fill the final opening in their rotation?Assuming Andy Pettitte returns, how should the Yankees fill the final opening in their rotation?Trade for Zack Greinke31.8%Sign Carl Pavano5.1%Sign someone else24.3%Give it to Ivan Nova or Sergio Mitre21.6%Give it to Joba Chamberlain17.1%Total votes: 292The first order of business is convincing Andy Pettitte to delay retirement at least one more year and return to the Bronx. But then New York is still left with one available spot. Zack Greinke's name has been swirling around in trade talks, but while he is a terrific pitcher, he's also a known sufferer of social anxiety disorder, and there's no way that would work in the Big Apple. Besides, the Royals would be asking for too much in return. The second best starter on the free-agent market is Carl Pavano, and there's no way the Yankees could be dumb enough to reconnect with that failed experiment. The most practical solution is to give Joba Chamberlain the starter's spot back that New York stole from him last Dallas Cowboys jersey
winter. In 2009, Joba started the season where he belonged—in the rotation. This would finally be the year we could forget about all the ridiculous "rules" and just let him pitch, right? Wrong. Chamberlain struggled with his control at times but still started the season 7-2 with a 3.58 ERA, capped off by an impressive 3-0, 0.83 ERA run after the All-Star Break. That's when the front office thought it would be a good time mess with Joba again. They threw off his routine by skipping some of his starts, and then, completely dismantled any momentum he had by restricting him to only a few innings or 60 pitches, whatever came first. Not surprisingly, Chamberlain went 2-4 with a 7.69 ERA over his final 11 "starts." But it was OK that manager Joe Girardi and Cashman were messing with the pitcher, because they were protecting him, keeping his innings down so that he could finally progress to a 200-inning starter in 2010. That was before the team traded for Javier Vazquez, pushing Chamberlain out of the rotation following a ridiculous Spring Training audition with Hughes. Not surprisingly, Vazquez went 8-10 with a 5.56 ERA over 26 starts and was left off the postseason roster. In the end, the decision to acquire Vazquez left the Yankees shorthanded once again in the playoffs, which led to them being completely overmatched by Lee and the Rangers and brought them back to Square One—desperate for another pitcher. I'm not confident that the Yankees will give Chamberlain another shot, being that it seems they would rather have Nick Swisher enter the rotation, but this is the only reasonable solution to a messy situation.

20 Dec 10 Oakland Raiders Challenged To Shore Up and They Have Done It with Three Wins

Justin Edmonds/Getty ImagesForewordSometimes it is good to look back and see what was written and to measure how things have changed for the Oakland Raiders. The three consecutive wins are an excellent indicator that the Oakland Raiders are moving on up in the NFL.The performance in the Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
second half of the game on Nov. 7 was a good example of the drive and passion the Oakland Raiders demonstrated to get a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Now what might the commentators be saying these days, Are they surprised? Are they dismayed? Are they converted to a more positive outlook for the Oakland Raiders in 2010?Let's revisit a pep talk, inspired by the creative arts but certainly applicable to the game wars on the playing field. One thing is certain: The Oakland Raiders' posture is strengthened and their powerful character on the playing field is getting the attention of the media and the Raider Nation. Their rank in the AFC West is much higher. Things are looking up.The ArticleIf you like interesting movies, then you might have viewed Brad Pitt playing a character named Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the leader of the Basterds. Raine gave a briefing to several soldiers. The main message, as I perceived it, was "take no prisoners."Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesAn application of this type of "shoring up" the Oakland Raiders so as to strengthen their passion and desire to win is what came to mind. The movie is fantasy, but wisdom is embedded in the creative arts, if only you have eyes to see and ears to hear. I saw and heard something that I immediately applied to the Oakland Raiders. In the last few days, the Oakland Raiders have been "shoring up" their defense. They are strengthening and designing a strategy for attack on the football field. Now in moments of fantasy, I imagine a coach telling the team something that stirs up their passion to win the football war.In the movie, Raine told his soldiers to scalp their enemies or opponents. He ordered them to leave signs of victory, so that the messagewould "strike fear"to any one Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
who comes after them.Raine even left a symbol on the forehead of his opponent, and when he outsmarted the German who was known for his cruelty and intelligent queries to trap others, he"branded" him, too, at the end of the movie.Well, consider this a metaphor and let's set up some parallels. The Oakland Raiders have been experiencing a type of"media holocaust" in the past seven years. This experience has inspired some to protest ESPN and some commentators who have not been completely fair and objective in their reporting. The Oakland Raiders are doingThe Oakland Raiders are doingVery good.69.4%Good.30.6%Fair0.0%No comment.0.0%Total votes: 36So, the Oakland Raiders are shoring up their defense, and some pep talks are going on.Adding guys like Rolando McClain, and others will help build a "take no prisoners" attitude on the playing field. Now don't make the mistake of the female character in the movie, who got rid of her opponent, then became compassionate and went over to check on him, only to be destroyed by her own compassion for her opponent. It's all fantasy, but it seems that you are more prone to enjoy the victories you attain, if you outsmart them, and defeat them on the playing field. Once you are victorious, move forward and don't look backwards.Move forward to the next victory with as much passion to win as you had for the first opponent you defeated. Some very good choices were made in the draft and tradesto strengthen the Oakland Raiders. Now, some very powerful, potent, and smart coaching is necessary to come away from the NFL playing field with victories and with no regrets of having played the game hard and smart. In 2010, you just may learn something from the theme in Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
Quentin Tarantino's movie. One lesson that is taught in the style of Tarantino's movie is to "fight back."A shift from only winning four or five games per season would be a big blow to a commentator who thought it could not be done. So, win more games in 2010, and those wins willput a symbolicmark on the foreheads of those who were naysayers.Go Raiders!

19 Dec 10 Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins: Vick's Great, but Others Stepped Up

While Vick was great, Reid and Mornhinweg had a great gamplanGregory Shamus/Getty ImagesWeeks ago, I heard someone say that Andy Reid had a Michael Vick problem. Vick was just too good to sit down and Reid was becoming more and more enamored with his much-maligned quarterback. After a dominating performance by Vick and the Eagles 59-28 victory, one thing is clear: Michael Vick is playing better than any QB in the NFL.However, I know we will read numerous articles about Vick and his MVP credentials, so I Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
wanted to focus on some of the other things from the game Monday that stood out to me—other players who stepped up and helped the Eagles pull off an amazing victory. The first person who deserved recognition is Andy Reid. Reid had his team ready to play and beata very good coach who was 10-4 coming off a bye. The Eagles were aggressive from the first play and the outcome of this game was never in doubt. Then there isMarty Mornhinweg. I don't think he has ever called a better game. From the first play, the Eagles came out and set the tempo with a huge touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. Mornhinweg got Vick outside the pocket and really did an excellent job.Perhaps the best play-call of the game was the shuffle pass to McCoy. What a great play-call, after getting off to a quick start, and then having Vick run for a touchdown, the Eagles drew the defense in and executed a perfect shuffle pass.Okay, here is your obligatory Vick photoChris McGrath/Getty ImagesThe Eagles offensive game plan was brilliant all day and you have to give Reid and Mornhinweg credit. They did a great job.How bout Jerome Harrison? In one play Harrison did more than Mike Bell did in the entire season. Harrison rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown on Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
just 11 carries. He gave the Eagles a legitimate one-two punch with LeSean McCoy.The Eagles wide receivers had a great game. I know Jackson only had two catches but he made a great catch in stride on the first play. Jeremy Maclin made a fantastic catch and a great job staying in bounds on a long touchdown. Even Jason Avant had a touchdown and was very effective. The defense was not great, but considering all the points they were good enough. They were great in the first quarter but they seemed to lose some focus after that. With a big lead, the team seemed to get distracted as they did not even see Fred Davis get wide open. Patterson got burned on a long pass to Armstrong and the 'Skins got within 21 points. While it was a dominating victory, it was disappointing that the defense appeared to lose some focus. You never want to let a team get momentum, but this is a day not to look at bad things, so I don't really want to elaborate any further on that. The victory was great but it is important for the Eagles to keep it in perspective. Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
It was a win to get them to 6-3 but there is still a lot of work to be done. The Eagles play the Giants at the Linc next week and if the Eagles lose, they are in second place. So we should enjoy this victory, but keep in mind there is a lot of football left to play. The goal was not a Week 10 victory against the 'Skins, the goal is to be in Dallas in February. For that goal, we have a long way to go.

18 Dec 10 NFL Game Preview for November 21, 2010: Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals (-5)

Ryan FitzpatrickElsa/Getty ImagesBetting Overview:The Buffalo Bills are flying high off their first win of the season. It took a 14-12 victory in Week 10 over the Detroit Lions to get them that first win, but the Bills will take it.The shining glimmer of hope that Buffalo can take away from their first victory isReebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
that their defense held the Lions offense to only 12 points. That probably would not be the case if Detroit had quarterback Matthew Stafford in the lineup, but the Bills took advantage of an opportunity and won the game. The Cincinnati Bengals are getting easier to figure out as the season goes on. The NFL betting hype around the Bengals when the season started was predicated on the Bengals offense. All of the NFL predictions about the Bengals going to the Super Bowl were based on quarterback Carson Palmer and the offense being able to put up impressive NFL scores. With no real running game to speak of, Cincinnati has had to rely on Palmer and the quarterback has not responded at all.Offense:The Bills were on a roll offensively until they got to the Detroit game. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was putting up 200 and 300 yard passing games and the Bills had taken two playoff contenders to overtime in the last three weeks. But when the Bills came up against the Lions, the passing game disappeared. Speedy wide receiver Roscoe Parrish is gone for the season, but it is doubtful that the Bills offense was changed based on Parrish being out.The bigger explanation is running back Fred Jackson’s 133 yards on the ground, 37 receiving yards and two Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
total touchdowns. The Bills were finally able to use their running game efficiently, so they used it to its maximum effect in their win.The unfortunate thing is that rookie running back C.J. Spiller could be lost for the season with a leg injury. The Bengals really need to get running back Cedric Benson back on track. Benson has 623 yards rushing this season, but he has only scored three touchdowns.Palmer was a disappointment in the Bengals Week 10 loss at the Colts. If Palmer could have been just a bit more accurate, the Bengals would have won that game. That has been the Bengals story all season long; their quarterback is inconsistent.Defense:The Bills defense has been ranked last, or near last, in every defensive category all season long. But somehow they were able to pull it together and shut down Detroit rookie running back sensation Jahvid Best. The Bills running defense is still ranked last and still horrible, but their secondary is the frustrating thing for Bills fans this season. As an example, second-year player Jairus Byrd set the league on fire last season with nine interceptions. This year he has none. The Bengals defense is ranked 15th overall and 12th against the pass. Cincinnati has been able to get good pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but cannot seem toReebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
contain the opposing team’s running game. The Bengals defense gives up just enough any given game to allow any team to stay in contention. The Bottom Line:Both the Bills and the Bengals will not be making the playoffs this year, but the Bills are looking towards the future. The Buffalo defense has been starving for turnovers this year, and Palmer is just the quarterback to deliver them.Pick: Buffalo Bills

17 Dec 10 Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett's Victory Kit

Tom Pennington/Getty ImagesI love hyperbole. I believe it is an essential part of being a fan of any sports team. I especially love when a fan's or writer's hyperbole is justified by a team's victory and the effort the team puts into it.Well, two weeks ago, I partook in a little hyperbole myself when Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
Tony Romo got lit up and Jon Kitna stepped onto the gridiron. I said to myself, "I am looking at Troy Aikman." Seriously, that is the vibe I got from Jon Kitna, and I Immediately knew why: his eyes were tiger-like, full of fearsome confidence and a blood-thirsty lust for victory.Kitna exuded leadership, true leadership, field general confidence; the kind of leadership the world has seen in the eyes of George Patton, Erwin Rommel, William Halsey, Norman Schwarzkopf, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. In the week leading up to the lights-out victory against the Giants at New Meadowlands Stadium, the Cowboys were being chastised by team royalty like Tony Dorsett, who called the team a bunch of under-achievers.Now, we are seeing some over-achievers like Dez Bryant, Brian McCann and Kitna. Bryant is becoming the second-coming of Michael Irvin. McCann is the player that we Cowboys fans have admired on other teams, always wishing that we had a Devin Hester or any other great kick returner. Now we have him and he wears a blue star on his head. But, Kitna jumped into the leadership position in the midst of an inevitable defeat against the Giants three weeks ago. Yet, regardless of the outcome of that game, we saw something in his last minute, no-huddle near-dismantling of the Giants defense with only a hapless receiving corps as his weapons: the beginnings of a long-overdue turn around. If anything, his performance was a foreshadowing of the coming weeks. Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
Looking at Kitna's performance, his QB rating is 89.7. That's better than Eli Manning's QB rating of 88.4. Keep in mind that Kitna is a 38-year-old backup QB and a 14-year veteran. Now, one can easily argue that if Wade Phillips were still the head coach, Kitna would not have as impressive a rating than he does now. That would be because the receiving corps was so woefully uninspired by the most uninspiring and frustrating head coach since Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg. Now, the entire Cowboys team is inspired by coach Jason Garrett, and Kitna's numbers are rocketing through the hole in Cowboys Stadium. However, it is not just the change of leadership that has the train moving. Before taking over for Romo, Kitna was building a rapport with Dez Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
Bryant, schooling Bryant on what goes on inside a QB's head and what the QB is looking for in his receivers. It also seems that Kitna and Bryant have found a super weapon in their game: the jump ball. Yes, Kitna and Bryant have been playing keepaway from the corner backs. As long as Kitna and Bryant and the rest of the receiving corps play keep away from the opposing corners, they'll be keeping the L column away for the remainder of the season

16 Dec 10 Fantasy Football: Week 12 Running Back (RB)

Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesThis morning, we updated our fantasy rankings for Week 12. Here are some notes on running backs and run defenses heading into this week's games:For a second week in a row, Panthers running back Mike Goodson rushed for 100-plus yards. In those two games against the Bucs and Ravens, Goodson has rushed for 220 yards—or 12 more than Jonathan Stewart has (208) in his eight games played. In his past three games, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew has 23-plus carries and 100-plus yards in Reebok Green Bay Packers #12 Aaron Rodgers Realtree camo Jersey
each game. Against the Browns in Week 11, MJD finished with 220 yards from scrimmage (133 rushing and 87 receiving).Atlanta's Michael Turner has had 20-plus carries, 100-plus yards and one or more touchdowns in three of his past four games. During that stretch Turner has 92 carries for 398 yards and five touchdowns.Buffalo's Fred Jackson has posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. He has 249 rushing yards in addition to nine receptions for 50 yards in those two games. He has also scored five touchdowns in the past three games.San Francisco running back Frank Gore set season lows in rushing yards (23) and yards from scrimmage (60) last week against the Bucs. Andre Johnson's Punch-Out: Why Cortland Finnegan Had It Coming

Andre Johnson had enough of Cortland Finnegan's dirty tactics on Sunday and laid into him. Finnegan had this coming.Bob Levey/Getty ImagesI usually hate NFL fights. These are multimillion-dollar professionals, after all. I feel people paid such high amounts of money should be held to a high standard for Saints jersey
behavior and work ethic. Then why was I cheering when Andre Johnson went off on Cortland Finnegan toward the end of the Houston Texans-Tennessee Titans game on Sunday?Finnegan had it coming.Known in the league as one of the NFL's most talented defensive backs, Finnegan is also one of the dirtiest. Cheap shots and unnecessary roughness plays that could cause injury to other players seem to be his forte.Over the 2010 season, Finnegan has already been fined twice by the NFL for his dirty tactics. In September, he threw New York Giants player Steve Smith to the ground by his helmet. In October, he hit Chris Kuper from the Denver Broncos after Kuper's helmet had come off.In Sunday's game, Finnegan constantly pushed Johnson's buttons with pokes and punches. Late in the game, Andre had had enough. He ripped Finnegan's helmet off, threw him to the ground and landed at least two solid punches before the incident was broken up. Both players were ejected from the game, as Finnegan continued to taunt and clap at both Johnson and the Texans fans.Finnegan taunts Johnson after the fight. If Finnegan doesn't clean up his play, the next player to loose their cool with him may do worse than a few punchesBob Levey/Getty ImagesSuch an incident will obviously see punishment from the office of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. There's speculation of heavy fines and possibly suspensions to be expected. Worth noting is that Finnegan was already warned of Bills jersey
further disciplinary action this season after his previous incidents.Johnson later apologized for his actions. Finnegan has refused comment as of press time. With this fight's aftermath certain to be a headline subject today, if I had the chance to speak to the people involved, here is what I would say.To Cortland FinneganYou deserved a couple of shots. You are a dirty player, and it was only a matter of time. While your exit from the game made it appear unlikely, I'd hope you would learn a lesson from this. You are too talented to have to resort to cheap shots, and next time a player has had enough it might be worse for you than a couple of punches. To Andre JohnsonNo apology necessary. He had it coming, and frankly I was glad to see it came from you. Finnegan's play makes him no more than a highly paid schoolyard bully at times, and he needed to know what it was like for someone to stand up to him.Commish Goodell should be harder on Finnegan than Johnson given the Titans player's other incidents this seasonJeff Zelevansky/Getty ImagesTo Roger GoodellThis is obviously an incident you will have to review and make a decision on. Hopefully you will realize that while Johnson's actions were not what you'd like to see from any NFL player, he Bears jersey
was provoked. Andre Johnson is one of the best-behaved players in the NFL, and the fact that such a cool-headed player lost his temper should speak volumes about Finnegan. As far as Finnegan goes, Mr. Goodell, I'd hope his punishment for the incident would be more than Johnson's. This is not Finnegan's first incident this season, and action beyond a fine should be considered before another incident takes place between him and another player.

Matt Cassel and the Kansas City Chiefs: How Do You Like Him Now?

Otto Greule Jr/Getty ImagesMatt Cassel has gotten a lot ofSteelers 43 Polamalu jersey
slack since first donning the Red and Gold. He certainly had a rough start coming through 2009 with as many interceptions as touchdowns. He started off rough in 2010 slowly gaining momentum as the season went on. At the beginning of the season fans screamed Cassel was terrible and many begged for Croyle. Some were even misguided enough to wish Deberg was still playing (no as crazy as it sounds I'm not making that up). As the season progressed the opinion shifted to he's an okquarterback but he's not elite and he's not our franchise quarterback. There were still fans calling for Croyle of course. Then came the game at Invesco Field... I think something about that game sparked a change in Cassel. He seems to be on fire ever since. Now he sits tied for 2nd in touchdowns with 22, has only 4 interceptions, and enjoys the 5th highest quarterback rating in the league at 99.7. Only one quarterback in the league has thrown for as many or more yards (more) with as few interceptions. For anyone that may not know that's the 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
illustrious Tom Brady. Wake up Kansas City we have a franchise quarterback on our hands he just needed the right handling. He can pass, he can and will run, he can fake, he can scramble. What more do you want on a running team? Do you want him to air it out and more than double his interceptions? Phillip Rivers has 9 this year and Peyton Manning has 11. Peyton Manning has thrown the same amount of touchdown passes this season as... you guessed it Matt Cassel. Phillip Rivers has thrown one more. Yards are NOT points and 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
ground yards are safer than air yards. Any Kansas City fan who has not joined the Matt Cassel fan club yet really should . It feels great to be here behind a great player and a great guy that you can feel good about your kids looking up to.

AFC South: A Look at Week 14 and Playoff Implications

The Titans host the Colts in tonight's NFL Network game from Nashville.Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesFor the second week in a row this weekend’s slate of NFL games begins with a Thursday night NFL Network game involving the AFC South. Last week it was Houston almost showing up against the Eagles, and this week’s NFLN game has two AFC teams doing work as the Indianapolis Colts are in the Volunteer state to play the Titans. The Colts, or Baby Horses, as I like to call them, have the No. 1 ranked passing Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
offense. Ordinarily that would be considered a good thing, but this is not an ordinary year for the team from Indy.Indianapolis cannot run the ball effectively, as evidenced by their ranking 32nd, dead stinking last. Overall the Colts offense rank fifth in the league.Tennessee, on the other hand, has the 12th ranked run offense and is 31st offensively passing, and has an overall offensive ranking of 30th in the league.Defensively, these two teams are nothing to write home about either. Indianapolis has the 29th ranked run defense and their pass defense is ranked fourth, for an overall ranking of 18th in the NFL.Tennessee’s defense is ranked 24th overall, with rankings of 22th against the run, and 23rd against the pass respectively, which seems fitting for two teams whose collective win-loss record is 11-13.The "Baby Horses" aren’t what they used to be. Peyton Manning leads a patchwork offense that sorely misses Dallas Clark, who is out for the season with a hand injury. Manning has thrown 11 interceptions over the last three games, and the Colts, winners of the AFC South for most of recent memory, are a beatable team.Even with a 6-6 record and second place in the AFCS, the Colts can't be taken lightly.Tennessee has not fared any better lately. Vince Young is out for the season, but his devolving into an immature prima donna had him lashing out at head coach Jeff Fisher and throwing his Titan gear into the stands.Rumors are swirling around Fisher possibly not being in Tennessee next season due to the fact that owner Bud Adams seems to be enamored with Young and is insistent that he play when healthy. Even with Manning’s sudden poor passing performances the Colts should be able to win against Tennessee. Remember two weeks ago in Houston? Titans rookie quarterback Rusty Smith threw three interceptions to Texans DB Glover Quinn, making Quinn seem, at least for one afternoon, like a player bound for Canton enshrinement. The Jacksonville Jaguars (I refer to them as "The Fast Cats") host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Oakland is 6-6 and in second place in the AFC West behind Kansas City and needs a win (who doesn’t this time of the year) to stay in playoff contention. The Jags rank 29th in passing offense, but are a very respectable second in rushing offense, and 17th overall. The Raiders have the ninth ranked defense against the pass, but a pedestrian 23rd against the run. If Maurice Jones-Drew can get going early, the Jags, who are a surprising 7-5 after 12 games, should keep their lead in the AFC South. Jacksonville should win this one. As a Texans fan I don’t like it, but that’s what I’m saying.Matt Schaub and the Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
Texans are 5-7 after 12 games for the 4th straight season. The last game this weekend has the Baltimore Ravens at Houston playing the Texans in Reliant Stadium. That’s an appropriate name for Houston’s home field, because we Texans fans have become “reliant” on disappointment from our team. For the fourth season in a row, Houston has a disappointing 5-7 record after 12 games. After last year’s first ever winning record at 9-7, we fans were sure our team could get in the postseason tournament for the first time ever this season. It’s still a possibility, but a lot of things that aren’t likely to happen will need to happen. The Ravens are 8-4 and will probably be a wild-card entry into the playoffs, barring an unlikely implosion by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Houston does have the league’s leading rusher in Arian Foster, with 1,230 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns, but while the offense is ranked seventh in the league, Houston’s defense is ranked 29th overall and 32nd (that’s dead stinking last) against the pass.Baltimore’s passing offense ranking? Glad you asked. The Ravens offense is ranked 14th overall, 15th against the pass and 16th against the run.Houston’s coach Gary Kubiak, who, just like last season, is enduring rumblings from the fans screaming for him to be fired, should run Foster and Derrick Ward early and often. That way, the Texans might have a chance against Baltimore.Think about this; Houston was driving the field sharply against San Diego in Week 9, when wide receiver Andre Johnson (who, mark my words, will be the first ever Houston Texans player enshrined in Canton’s Hall of Fame) kicks the ball out of his own hands into the waiting arms of a Chargers safety. In Week 10, Texans DB Glover Quinn, who was just doing what he was coached to do, batted down a hail-Mary pass from Jags QB David Garrard that went directly into the hands of 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
Jacksonville wide receiver Mike Thomas for the winning score. What’s the point? Simply this; Houston is two bounces of the football away from being 7-5 instead of their present 5-7. I know, “if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, what a party we could have”, or something to that effect.I think it was Bo Schembechler who said “a football is shaped funny and it bounces weird”. Well someday, the ball will bounce Houston’s way, but we Texans fans want sooner than later. What we fans need is for Houston to beat Baltimore, Oakland to beat the Jags, and Tennessee and Indianapolis to play to a tie. Dare to dream.

Pittsburgh Steelers Ben Roethlisberger Hines Ward

Colts jersey
Fans sat on the edge of their seats in Heinz Stadium, terrible towels flew, and the noise level was elevated, as Patriots' kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked a last minute field goal, making the score 23 - 20, giving Tom Brady and company a much earned victory of the Pittsburgh Steelers.The2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
game stayed close throughou, with the Patriots putting the first points on the board. Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger came back and threw an 85 yard pass play to wide receiver Hines Ward, who ran the ball into the end-zone to tie the game. Steelers' kicker Josh Reed followed with two field goals on the board, giving the home team a 13 - 7 lead. The fourth quarter was action packed, as Patriots' running back Corey Dillon ran in a 7 yard touchdown. Then kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked a 35 yard field goal, extending the Patriots' lead to seven points. With a minute and 21 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw a 4 yard pass to Ward, tying the game once again. But all hopes of going into overtime were shot when New England QB 6 Sanchez White Jersey
Tom Brady quickly took his team down the field. Once again, Vinatieri was brought to the field and kicked a field goal with one second left on the clock, giving his team the 23 - 20 victory over the Steelers. The Patriots' Tom Brady threw 41 passes, completing 31 of them for 372 yards. On the other hand, Ben Roethlisberger threw 28 passes for the Steelers, completing only 12 of them for 216 yards. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a bye week coming up. This will give the team time to get healthy, and to prepare for their upcoming game against the San Diego Chargers.

San Francisco 49ers John York Mike Nolan

Can it be? Has San Francisco 49ers owner John York once again given in Mike Nolan's wishes? That definitely seems to be the case, and it bodes well for the 49ers' franchise.According to published reports, York has agreed to create a team president position that will be filled by a "football guy" as opposed to business executive. This was something that Nolan had been asking for and will now apparently get.In the overall scheme of things, this is a great sign. San Francisco fans should be rejoicing because the normally spendthrift and business oriented YorkSteelers 36 Bettis Jersey
is following through on his promise to do whatever it takes to make the 49ers competitive again. He is listening to Mike Nolan and equipping the 2nd year head coach with the tools that he will need to once again create a winner in San Francisco. The actual position has not been publicly acknowledged yet, nor have the job duties been clearly outlined, but the team has allegedly already begun interviewing for the spot. Way to go John York. After a failed stint as head coach of the , Norv Turner has moved just up the road to become the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Turner was fired by the Raiders earlier this month after compiling a 9-23 record in two seasons with the team.49ers' head coach Mike Nolan was more than happy to bring in his former boss to help streamline the offense. Nolan worked as Turner's defensive coordinator from 1997-1999 in Washington. Now Turner will be charged with overseeing the development of sophomore quarterback Alex Smith. The entire San Francisco 49ers franchise hopes that Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
Turner can develop Smith much in the same way he did with Troy Aikman in Dallas. While Norv Turner has failed thus far as an NFL head coach (51-62-1) his track record as an offensive coordinator is extremely solid. His hiring could prove to be a turning point for the Niners' young offense.

San Francisco 49ers Patrick Willis

2:09And the San Francisco 49ers are on the clock. Patrick Willis or Adam Carriker is going to be the choice here...probably. 2:10 Ok, as a PS3 owner, the trailer for Call of Duty 4 just about gave me a heart attack. Holy cow. 2:12The Niners are in the process of trading for Darrell Jackson, a terrific 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
possession receiver, from the Seahawks. Word has it they're getting him for a fourth-round pick, the 124th overall selection in the draft, and the whole thing is dependent on him passing a physical. If this is true, the Niners have pulled off a HUGE trade, and they've received an excellent player for next to nothing. Jackson may not be as talented as some of the other receivers in this draft class, but is a very good player and you know exactly what you're getting with him. It also frees up the Niners to do much more in the draft. They could still take a receiver in the later rounds, but they're not forced to try to find someone. They can just take whoever happens to fall to them. Definitely a good spot to be in.2:17I wonder how many people in San Francisco right now are saying something like, "We 6 Sanchez White Jersey
should draft Brady Quinn, trade Alex Smith, and we'll win the Super Bowl!!"If you think that, turn off your TV, go outside, and find a group of people playing soccer. I'm not even kidding. 12:19With the 11th pick, the 49ers select Patrick Willis...and they are set at linebacker for the next five or six years. Fantastic pick by the Niners.By the way, what's with all the White Sox hats? Did we time jump back into 1995? Did I miss something?

Jacksonville Jaguars Dave Campo passed over by 49ers

It looks like Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach and secondary coach Dave Campo will be staying put. The former Dallas Cowboys head man recently interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' vacant defensive coordinator position. But according to published reports, he has been passed over for the job.Are you glad that Dallas Cowboys jersey
Campo is staying in Jacksonville for the time being? Share your opinion via the comment section below... The talk of the offseason surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars has been about the wide receiving corps. All-Pro receiver Jimmy Smith, who decided it was time to hang up the pads and cleats, has left many in Jacksonville worrying about who might replace him.In May, I highlighted the three receivers auditioning for Smith's vacant No. 1 receiver spot. The word around the league at the time was the team lacked a true deep threat that can stretch defenses. I mentioned how each isn't the deep threat Smith was, but highlighted their strong points that offensive coordinator Carl Smith will try to design the offense around. While the perception may have been that the team wants to devise a plan to win on the arm of quarterback Byron Leftwich, head coach Jack Del Rio has made it clear as day that he was upset last season over what he deemed not enough commitment to the running game. Because of that, Del Rio hired longtime friend Mike Tice as "assistant head coach/offense." Essentially, it appears that, although the team's offense was statistically better in Carl Smith's first year at the helm, they still struggled to score on a consistent basis. With Tice looking over his shoulder, and Del Rio breathing down his neck, expect the commitment to the running game to be increased. In fact, more running plays have been added to the playbook. However, the running game is a topic for another day down the line. As far as the receivers go, the 6-4, long-armed Ernest Wilford has been the most impressive in minicamps, but has been bumped to second string. Many may ask why he would be demoted even though he is playing the best. It comes 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
down to the fact that Wilford isn't fast, and the coaching staff feels his size in the slot would cause plenty of mismatches they could exploit. Now that Wilford is in the slot, the battle for Smith's replacement will play out over the summer months. The Jacksonville Jaguars' youngsters, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, are vying hard to win the job.Eric Krupka can be reached at ekrupka Get more Jacksonville Jaguars info

Jacksonville Jaguars Hawaii Chris Naeole Chad Owens Vince Manuwai Wayne Hunter

Hawaii. An island group well-known for its enormous waves, volcanic peaks, Polynesian women and lei-wielding welcoming committees. And, of course, its propensity for churning out world-class football players. With a head count of roughly 1,275,000 inhabitants, Hawaii has the eighth-lowest population size out of America's 50 states. Amazingly, slightly smaller than recent population estimates of the city of Jacksonville. Yet, based on a 2004 study on NFL player backgrounds, Hawaii also ranked eighth among the 50 states in the number of 6 Sanchez Green Jersey
players from its high schools who now fill a spot on a pro roster, a ranking that is steadily growing with each passing year. With four Hawaiians currently vying for spots on the final 53-man roster, the Jaguars have more Hawaiian players on their team than any other franchise in the NFL. In the 11 years since the team's inception, the Jags have consistently held this title. Were Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala still on the squad, the Jaguars would have the distinction of fielding more Hawaiians in one season than any other team in NFL history. Back to the topic of Hawaiian football. One of the reasons for the rising football talent pool in Hawaii is the fervent high school football fan base that exists. In Hawaiian sports culture, high school football is king - to the point that games are regularly broadcast on statewide television stations and big high school matchups are frequently scheduled in the 55,000-seat Aloha Bowl arena. Kahuku, Hawaii's premier high school football team, was visited by more than 20 NCAA Division I-A scouting representatives in 2004. Last year, Sports Illustrated ranked the athletic program of Punahou, another Hawaiian high school, fourth out of the near 38,000 football programs in the United States. The NFL Pro Bowl, which is held annually in the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu, is more than just a game to Hawaiians. It is a protracted, week-long celebration replete with league-organized festivals, public practices, block parties, concerts and contests set up for both fans and players alike. As mentioned earlier, Hawaii's lack of professional sports franchises is another factor that contributes both to the popularity of the island state's many high school football programs and to the enormous fan base of the "Big Kahuna" of Hawaiian athletics - the University of Hawaii. Football at the University of Hawaii had something of a checkered past before the arrival of June Jones, a former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1994-1996. Jones took the reins from Hawaii's old coach, Fred von Appen, who was fired after leading (or failing to lead) the Rainbow Warriors to a 17-game losing streak, including all 12 games in his final season. In his first year as coach, Jones did more than just steady the sinking ship that the University of Hawaii football program had become. Jones took total control of the helm and captained the team to a 9-3 record, completing the greatest single-season turnaround in Div. I-A history. As head coach, Jones was responsible for building a stockpile of prominent college football players, many of whom have gone on to thrive in the National Football League. Three of Jones' former Warriors - Vince Manuwai, Wayne Hunter and Chad Owens - are currently on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster. Chris Naeole, who grew up in Hawaii but spent his college years blocking defensive linemen as a Colorado Buffalo, rounds out the "Hawaiian Bunch" of the Jaguars. The presence of the "Hawaiian Bunch" has catapulted the state's interest in the team. Despite being about as far away as geographically possible, the Jaguars have quickly become the professional football team to watch in Hawaii. According to last year's Google Search records, the term "Jaguars" was queried tens of thousands of times across the island-state, giving Honolulu the fifth highest search count for that phrase out of any city in the world. In addition to the team's stable of standout Hawaiian players from the University of Hawaii, the Jaguars have also acquired two former Hula Bowl MVPs in Derrick Wimbush and Brent Hawkins - a fact that is not lost on Hawaiian football fans who live and die for the premier invitational venue. The offensive line, staffed by three Hawaiians and another 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
player with biological ties to Hawaii, is already starting to look like a squad of beefy South Pacific sumo wrestlers. Contrast the look with that of Chad Owens, the Jacksonville Jaguars' small, speedy receiver destined to make a significant impact on the field this year, and you get the full spectrum of Hawaiian athletic talent. So far, things are looking up for this group. As a whole, they are responsible for making some indisputably positive contributions to the team. As long as Chris Naeole doesn't convince the rest of the squad to subscribe to his habit of wearing Hawaiian skirts to training camp, those contributions appear poised to remain in the black for a long time to come.- Jacksonville Jaguars

set to meet L.T. at worst possible time

The month of September is nearing its end, and San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is still in search of his first 100-yard game.Just in time to meet his favorite opponent, the .The five-time Pro Bowler, who’s been battling a nagging toe injury to begin the 2008 campaign, is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry this year. The perennial favorite to take home the NFL rushing title has amassed just 190 yards through three contests, racking up 97, 26 and 67 yards, respectively, to begin the season.Tomlinson returned to practice Thursday after taking a day off 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
to nurse a right big toe injury that has cut down his playing time significantly this season. Despite the time off, Chargers head coach Norv Turner -- who held that position in Oakland earlier this decade -- still isn’t convinced his starting running back is 100 percent.“It’s not behind him,” Turner admitted. “He took yesterday off and I think that helped him.”Sure, the time off should help. But the timing should help even more.In 14 matchups, the Raider ‘D’ has allowed the 29-year-old Tomlinson to run for more than 1,700 yards (122 yards per game) and score 19 touchdowns.“I enjoy playing there,” Tomlinson said. “I think it is one of the better places in the National Football League to play just because they got a great fan base that really gets into the game.”“And because I run all over them,” he should have added. This Sunday could be especially bad for the Raiders, too. With injuries all across the D-line and Tomlinson feeling a bit better, there’s a recipe for disaster brewing in Oakland. Two of the Raiders’ most effective linemen through the start of the ‘08 season, defensive end Derrick Burgess and defensive tackle Gerard Warren, are battling injuries that could severely thin the D-line in Week 4. Burgess is nursing a tricep injury and is questionable, while Warren is dealing with a pectoral tear and is doubtful. If Burgess can’t find a way to play -- or can’t finish the game -- Kalimba Edwards, who has played well thus far into the season, would receive the bulk of the reps. Edwards, though, has been used primarily this season as a passing-down rusher, and hasn’t been tested heavily against the run. With Warren -- the Raiders’ most effective DT -- likely out, the bulk of the confusion up front will stem from the interior of the line. Both Tommy Kelly and Terdell Sands are healthy; however, Sands benefits most from being able to rotate in and out with Warren, while Kelly hasn’t shown any consistent dominance this season. Defensive end Jay Richardson could see some time at DT to fill in for the injured 325-pounder, as well as DE/TE/OL Fred Wakefield, who saw time at tackle last week against Buffalo.“Fred’s doing well. It’s not an easy thing to do. The guy was playing offensive line the third week of preseason and he goes over to defensive line,” head 36 Bettis White Jersey
coach Lane Kiffin said of Wakefield’s sudden shift from offense to defense. “Not just defensive end, he’s inside at defensive tackle. That’s a very, very hard thing to do.”Particularly if Tomlinson's coming to town. In the teams' last nine meetings, the Chargers have come out on top in each one by an average margin of 15.4 points. The last time Oakland topped San Diego was on Sept. 28, 2003, exactly five years apart from when they’ll meet this Sunday. That bit of irony is the good news. The bad news: Then-QB Rich Gannon threw for 348 yards in the win. That ain’t happening. (56)

Saints may be perfect opponent for Cable;s Raider debut

The New Orleans Saints aren;t, by any stretch of the imagination, an easy challenge for any NFL team. That applies more so than ever for the . In fact, substitute any team;s name in that sentence, and it still applies for the .But when the Raiders travel to New Orleans this Sunday to meet the 2-3 Saints, new interim head coach 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
Tom Cable won;t be marching into a specially dire situation. In fact -- at least on paper -- the Raider offense matches up well against the Saints; ;D;.And that;s exactly how Cable will be judged -- based on the offense;s effectiveness (and discipline).Oakland didn;t do particularly anything well offensively to start the season under Lane Kiffin, except run the ball. And that was thanks in large part to Cable;s handling of the team;s offensive line. If second-year passer JaMarcus Russell can find any rhythm with his wide receivers for the first time this year, Cable will look like an instant improvement over Kiffin. The 44-year-old ex-Atlanta Falcons assistant will be roaming the sidelines as a head coach for the first time in his NFL career after owner Al Davis opted to fire his 33-year-old predecessor during the team;s bye week. Greg Knapp, who was the offensive coordinator under Kiffin, will be taking over the duty of calling the plays.Luckily, the two newcomers have plenty of positive matchups to look forward to heading into Oakland;s Week 6 road contest.Statistically, the best part of New Orleans; 24th-ranked stop unit is a running ;D; that still allows its opponents to average over 100 yards a game and ranks 16th in the NFL.The Raiders should have no problem running through the Saints; D-line, particularly coming off a bye week that allowed banged-up rookie back Darren McFadden to rest his right foot and veteran halfback Justin Fargas to recover from a groin injury. Both rushers, along with downhill ballcarrier Michael Bush, are ready to play Sunday, and Cable should certainly benefit from having all three options available.;I think it;s really important because he (Fargas) is the consistent runner in our system," Cable told the San Francisco Chronicle Thursday. ;He;s proven that obviously with the year he had last year. He was off to a good start until the injury. I think that gets their attention right away, which only adds to the passing game.;Last week, New Orleans had a rare defensive showing, letting 2007 rookie of the year Adrian Peterson gain only 32 yards on the ground on 21 carries. Peterson certainly doesn;t look like the same halfback as last year, though; he;s been held to 80 yards or fewer in three consecutive games. The only thing worse than the Saints; lackluster rush ;D; is their 27th-ranked pass defense.Russell will finally have an opportunity to showcase an arm that has been bragged about more times than tested in his short pro career. That;s because Cable is a firm believer in balance on the offensive side of the football.;So for us, stop putting words to it, [we need to] go out and start throwing the ball around and have good balance. I don;t want to go out there and have drives where we threw it three times and we;re out or we ran it three times and we're out. I don't want that anymore. I want to see balance.;Under Kiffin, Oakland was seen almost entirely as a rushing team and Russell was very limited in what he could do. The 23-year-old QB 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey black jersey
has averaged just 13; completions and 167 yards per game through four contests. He;s also thrown just four passing touchdowns, along with one interception.Luckily, the Saints; secondary is very pass-friendly.New Orleans lets in over 240 aerial yards each contest and has allowed a league-worst 19 completions over 20 yards. They also rank 30th in first downs allowed through the air and have a relatively modest four picks through five games.;Never be afraid to make mistakes,; Cable told the Mercury News, ;but make mistakes at 100 miles per hour, because you;ll grow from that quicker, you;ll learn from that quicker.;As someone labeled an interim head coach for the time being, learning as fast as possible is essential for Cable. The New Orleans Saints might just be the perfect team to start the learning experience. Raiders @ Chiefs

The much improved face off against the Kansas City Chiefs with new Head Coach Todd Haley. The Raiders have played the Chiefs 97 times in the regular season with the Chiefs coming away with 51 wins. Last time these Division rivals met the Raiders came away with a 23-8 win 4 Brett Favre White jersey
at Arrowhead Stadium. In a long day for the Chiefs the Raiders came away with over 300 yards on the ground. Darren McFadden totaled 164 yards rushing against 8 in the box the whole day. Preparing for this game is going to be a little tougher than normal with QB Matt Cassel being a game time decision and Raiders #1 WR Chaz Schilens out for this game. Other player status: Nick Miller, Out, Johnnie Lee Higgins Questionable, Greg Ellis DE, Probable, Nnamdi Asomugh Probable, and Kirk Morrison, Probable. This game will probably be determined by Kansas City not being able to get to the Quarterback using an 8 man rush and they still haven't displayed an ability to stop the run.Last week Kansas City finished 28th against the pass, (307 yards) and 31st against the run, (198 yards), and Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
30th in points allowed, (38).Let's not get over confident, year after year, this is a knock down drag out game with the winner walking away tired and bloody. That being said, the much improved Raiders should be able to control the clock with a dominating run game and a couple of quick strikes via JaMarcus Russell and Louis Murphy.Prediction: Raiders 34, Kansas City 24.
