A NEW DAY Colts Look for Consistency While Preparing for Denver Broncos

INDIANAPOLIS – One game does not decide a season.
Peyton Manning, in his 13th season as the Colts' quarterback, said while that was true last week after a double-digit loss in the regular-season opener, it's just as true this week following a decisive prime-time, nationally-televised victory.
Yes, Manning said, there were positives established nfl jerseys
Sunday against the New York Giants.
But those mean little if they're not built upon.
“It's probably too early to start talking about being back on track,” Manning said Wednesday afternoon as the Colts (1-1) prepared to play the Denver Broncos (1-1) of the AFC West at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Sunday at 4:15.
“I don't know if after Week Two you've identified a course quite yet.”
The Colts, the AFC South champions six of the past seven seasons, enter Week Three tied for second in the division, one game behind Houston. Five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Frenzy said the Colts' focus for now is on continuing to improve, and continuing to focus on them.
“It's just important that we kind of do what we do,” said Frenzy, who had two sacks and two forced fumbles Sunday, and who now has three sacks in two games this season.
“Every day is different. It's a new day. We're not really worried about what happened in the past. We've got to correct those mistakes, but we have to keep on moving forward. We take everything in small steps, and the big things usually take care of themselves.”
Manning said a primary goal for the Colts this week is establishing consistency. They lost to the Houston Texans, 34-24, in Week One at Houston in a game in which Indianapolis trailed throughout with the Texans pulling away in the second half.
In Week Two, the Colts took an early lead at Lucas Oil Stadium, leading the Giants 24-0 by halftime, a margin that allowed the Colts' pass rush to control the second half en route to a 38-14 victory.
“Sunday night's game is the kind of effort and execution we're looking Dallas Cowboys jersey
for,” Manning said. “We did not have that in Week One.”
Manning said from an offensive perspective that was particularly true. And it was particularly true of the offensive balance.
A week after Manning threw a career-high 57 passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns in Houston, the Colts ran 43 times against the Giants for 160 yards.
The 43 rushing attempts were the most for the Colts in Manning's 13 seasons.
“It's a great feeling,” Manning said. “It was really fun to watch. You hand off and you're supposed to carry out your fake, but when you see (running back Joseph) Addax going for 10 yards, 15 yards, it's kind of hard not to watch. It's something we would love to see on a consistent basis.
“He and Donald (Brown) both ran so hard. The line, the tight ends, the receivers did a great job blocking for him, giving both of them holes.”
Addax against the Giants rushed for 92 yards on 20 carries, with Brown rushing for 69 yards on 16 carries and an early seven-yard touchdown.
Brown laughed when asked if the Colts were now a “running team.”
“I wouldn't say that,” Brown said. “We just want to help him (Manning) out any way we can and take some of the pressure off of him at times. The offensive line did a great job, and we just have to capitalize on it and make the most of every run.”
Manning said it will be important for the Colts to achieve something similar in offensive balance the rest of the season.
“It was an excellent job on the run game on Sunday, but you want it to be a consistent thing and not an every-other-week type thing,” he said. “There's no question it opens up so many things. It makes the quarterback's job easier, and it makes the play-caller's job easier. You don't have to dial up creative ways to get yards and to get first downs.
“If you're going first down, second down, first down with the same running play, it makes a lot of jobs easier, I would say that.”
Manning said while offensive balance is important, if the Colts had to choose between a game with a high number of passing attempts and a high number of rushing attempts, the latter is more ideal.
“The way it went last week would be more the goal, I think,” Manning said. “It was more run than pass, and I'd say that's been pretty rare around here. Twenty-six pass attempts compared to 57 – that usually means you're probably scoring more points and being more effective.Colts jersey

“The first game, throwing that many attempts – it means you're behind. It means you're being one-dimensional. Something along the lines of the way we balanced it out against the Giants is what we're shooting for. The main thing is you're looking for that production.”
But Manning said while the Colts improved against the Giants, that Chargers jersey
improvement gives no assurance that it will continue Sunday.
“It's a totally different game,” Manning said. “It's a totally different opponent this week. I know we did practice much better last week, and it did carry onto the field. We're looking for that same kind of consistent week of practice this week, which hopefully will translate into better play.”

Reid admits he was wrong and so do I

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The solution to that error isn’t to ignore Michael Vick’s unexpected brilliant play, the shaky performance of Philadelphia’s offensive line and return Kolb to the starting lineup.
What you do is assess the new information and make the decision that gives your football team the best chance to win now and going forward.
This is Andy Reid’s finest moment. His critics come off as nfl throwback jerseys
disingenuous and/or obtuse. We beg for powerful, prideful and wealthy men to demonstrate the courage to admit their mistakes and quickly correct them.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Reid did just that, acknowledging his intelligence might have overstated Kolb’s weapons of mass construction and recognizing Vick might finally be prepared to ascend to his QB destiny.
Reid hasn’t damaged the immediate or long-term future of the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s making a play to enhance both.
There’s a reason Vick was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2001 draft and Kolb was the 36th pick of the 2007 draft. Vick was supposed to be the next Steve Young, a left-handed Hall-of-Fame quarterback with the athleticism to play receiver. Kolb, with a little luck, was supposed to be a poor man’s Drew Brees.
The second coming of Steve Young is superior to a cheap Drew Braes knockoff, especially when your offensive line consistently fails to protect the quarterback.
Vick can be Philly’s starting quarterback for at least the next six years. He’s just 30, the same age Young was when he took over in San Francisco. Young won a Super Bowl and two MVP trophies during his eight-year reign in the Bay.
Look, I’m no huge Michael Vick fan. I trashed him pretty much the entire time he played in Atlanta. He reminded me of Allen Iverson, a great talent who lacked the discipline, character and professionalism to be a big-time winner. I repeatedly pointed out that Vick’s black sycophants/enablers were the main reason he failed to mature. Hell, just a couple of months ago, I wrote this column bashing Vick for hosting a “white linen” party that ended in gunfire.
But I’m not going to deny the kid is balling out of control right now. I’m happy he’s finally living up to his potential. And I pray that prison, year learning under McNabb, mentoring from Tony Dungy and the amazing demonstration of faith Reid and the Eagles organization just showered on Vick help San Diego Chargers jersey
the QB properly handle this success.
I’m like Andy Reid. I’m willing to adjust to new information.
Vick did hard time, lost a fortune and destroyed his reputation for his involvement in a dog fighting ring. That debt is paid. We have to be open minded and let the new Michael Vick emerge.
I absolutely love what I’m seeing on the football field.
“His accelerated play was brilliant,” Reid told reporters in Philadelphia Tuesday. “This is what I think is right. He’s back and maybe even a little better.”

Hell yes, he’s better. He’s more focused. He has more weapons than he ever had in Atlanta. Demean Jackson; Jeremy Macklin, Brent Celled and Leeann McCoy are all in-their-prime playmakers.
What I love most about Vick 2.0 is the humility he’s shown throughout this process. After he backed up his marvelous second-half play against the Packers with a fabulous performance against the Lions, Vick stated he had no problem turning the team back over to Kolb. When Reid flip-flopped Tuesday, Vick told ESPN’s Sal Palatino that he felt “humbled.”
This is potentially a phenomenal story about the kind of redemption that is possible in America. The story is about the possibilities that lay ahead, not what transpired in the past.
McNabb is still my favorite current player. I’m still not happy the Eagles jettisoned him shortly after they acquired a group of skill position players who could complement McNabb’s abilities.
I began this season hoping Kolb would fail, Vick would be a disaster and Reid would get bounced on his ample ass.
I’ve changed my mind. This is a better story.
An organization with a reputation for cheapness and Chicago Bears jersey
stubbornness gave Kolb $10.5 million in guaranteed money, committed to Kolb throughout the off-season and reacted properly when presented a set of new facts.
Reid is my new favorite football coach, and I hope the Eagles reach the Super Bowl.

24 sep 10 Flix dig the long ball: Burns takes on HR chase

BOSTON (AP)—When Ken Burns decided to update his epic documentary “Baseball” to chronicle the tumultuous developments since it first aired in 1994, he knew that he didn’t want to make a movie of the Mitchell Report.
Instead, Burns and co-producer Lynn Novick tried to bring Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and their pursuit of the sport’s hallowed home run records to viewers as fans experienced them at the time.
“If you did the home run chase from the perspective of nfl jerseys
what we know in 2010, it would be joyless,” Burns said Wednesday before “The Tenth Inning” premiered in a Boston theater. “But we all know how exciting that was. We wanted to relive some of that, but at the same time give equal time to the other revelations.”
In the four-hour miniseries scheduled to debut on PBS next Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Burns and Novick take “Baseball” into extra innings, updating the original 18 1/2-hour documentary on the first 150 years of the sport’s history to include the successes and scandals since 1994.
A red-carpet premiere at a Brookline theater just down the street from Fenway Park on Wednesday night drew Red Sox fans who cheered as they watched highlights from the team’s ’04 World Series victory. Former Boston pitcher Curt Schilling(notes), a star of that series, took part in a panel discussion afterward with Burns and other contributors to the movie.
“The Tenth Inning” details the influx of Latin American and Asian players, baseball’s help in healing - or at least distracting - the country from the Sept. 11 attacks, the rise of a new Yankees’ dynasty and the Red Sox cathartic championship in 2004. It contains mini-profiles of Cal Ripken Jr., Ichiro Suzuki(notes) and new statistical fads such as VORP.
And then there’s steroids.
Relying on deft foreshadowing, Burns and Novick are content for much of the film to hint at the crisis to come without getting bogged down in what Novick called “the steady drumbeat of steroid revelations, one disappointment after another.” But make no mistake: there is no glossing over the way performance-enhancing drugs dominated the decade.
“We realize that knowing what we know now is sometimes a disservice to giving the full life and humanity to the people of the moment. And for that home run chase, it was exciting,” Burns said. “We didn’t want that to be sucked out, and so we realized, in good time, this will be revealed, and why don’t we learn it in the way that America in general learned it.”
“You don’t make a film as a fan,” Burns said, “you make a film as a filmmaker.”
More than 43 million viewers tuned in for the original - the most-watched program in PBS history - eager for any kind of baseball at a time when major league players were on strike during a labor dispute that would lead to cancellation of the 1994 World Series.
The enjoyment for them was in seeing things for the first time, whether it was archival footage of Babe Ruth at play or the storytelling of Buck O’Neill that brought the Negro Leagues to life. (“The Tenth Inning” is dedicated to O’Neill, who stole the show in the original documentary and died in 2006.)
The challenge the filmmakers face in the update was in presenting Ichiro or Ripken or Roger Clemens or Sammy Sosa to an audience that already knew what happened and, in some cases, would just as soon forget.
“We wanted to take familiar events that we’ve all lived through Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
and tried to bring some extra dimension to them, and to tell it from a perspective that doesn’t betray what we know from the present,” Burns said. “We all go to Ford’s Theater thinking that maybe this time Booth won’t shoot him. Good history is always being on the edge of your chair, thinking it might not turn out the way that you know that it did.”
“The Tenth Inning” opens - after the requisite “Star-Spangled Banner” and title sequence - with Bonds as a skinny Pirates star, failing to throw Sid Bream out at the plate in the 1992 NL championship series as the Atlanta Braves go on to the World Series instead of Pittsburgh.
We also see Bonds as McGwire and Sammy Sosa, both less talented but better-loved, captivate the nation while chasing Roger Maris’ single-season record of 61 home runs. Bonds bulks up, and so do his home run numbers, and soon he has surpassed not just McGwire’s new single-season mark but Hank Aaron’s career total of 755 as well.
That’s the advantage Burns and Novick have in dealing with the more modern era: The viewer already knows, without being told, why Bonds reported to the Giants 20 pounds heavier one spring. Or what was meant when a trainer agreed to do whatever Clemens asked. (Viewers will also chuckle at the reference to disgraced Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, lashing out at Cubs fan Steve Bartman for interfering with a foul ball).
When they show photographs of McGwire and Jose Canseco together, it’s understood that they will both eventually leave the sport in shame, destined to be the stars of former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell’s investigation into steroid abuse in baseball.
“Having dealt with more than 150 years of baseball history, we tried to put it in a little bit of perspective,” Burns said. “In my mind, this is not the worst baseball scandal ever.”
For Burns, that would be the exclusion of black ballplayers in the first half of the century, before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier - a major theme of the original documentary. (It also chronicled widespread gambling and cheating in the sport’s early days, culminating in the throwing of the 1919 World Series by the Chicago White Sox - also worse than steroids, in Burns’ opinion).
Robinson’s arrival opened the door for more blacks, and for players Minnesota Vikings jersey
from Latin America and Asia. It also forced the nation to be more open to minorities in other areas.
It’s not clear that steroids will have the same positive effect, but Burns is hopeful.Indianapolis Colts jersey

“Jackie Robinson showed baseball to be the meritocracy that American wants to be,” Burns said. “Baseball has always been a change agent.”

Matthews a reminder of decade of poor drafting

Cowboys jersey
There are so many thoughts, so many jarring realities, that ricochet through the brain after witnessing a performance like this one. Can we really endure another 14 weeks of this Bills team without suffering some form of permanent psychological damage? I have to confess, the idea of no NFL football next year because of nfl jersey
a work stoppage seems pretty appealing right now.
But in the immediate aftermath of the 34-7 thrashing the Bills took at the hands of the Packers here Sunday, there was one vivid and lasting image. It was of a guy with long, blond hair flowing out of his helmet and the No. 52 on the back of his jersey, roaming free in the Buffalo backfield.
Clay Matthews III.
Wow. Is he done yet? Or did Matthews sack Trent Edwards on the tarmac as he tried to board the team plane? It might be the most dominant defensive performance against the Bills since a young Ray Lewis battered them in 1999 (and yes, it was Clay's namesake and father who picked off Jim Kelly at the end of the Cleveland playoff loss in '89.)
But I digress. Matthews had three sacks Sunday. He was credited with five quarterback hurries. He forced the fourth Green Bay sack when he chased poor Edwards into the arms of Cullen Jenkins. He grabbed Edwards' arm to force a big incompletion.
The only thing Matthews didn't do was knock Edwards out of the game, even though the Bills insisted on letting Edwards play to the final, merciful conclusion. A week earlier, Matthews knocked out Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb in another three-sack performance.
That's six sacks in two games. Chris Kelsay gets six sacks every two years. At that rate, Matthews will break Michael Strahan's league record of 22.5 by midseason. If he keeps this up, the USC product will run away with the Defensive Player of the Year award.
"Unfortunately, I saw a lot of him today," Edwards said. "I know Kevin Kolb saw a lot of him last week. He's a great football player. He gives 100 percent for 60 minutes."
Now, the shot to the gut. The more astute fans spent much of Sunday screaming this regrettable fact at the TV set: The Bills could have had Matthews in the first round of the 2009 draft. They took Aaron Maybin instead.
Sure, the Bills weren't the only ones to miss on him. Matthews went with the 26th overall pick. The Bills also passed on linebackers Brian Cushing, who won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, and Brian Orakpo, who made the Pro Bowl. So '09 was one of the great all-time drafts for outside linebackers. And the Bills picked Maybin, an end, who couldn't get on the field as a rookie, then became an outside 'backer when they shifted to a 3-4. He still can barely find his way onto the field.
Maybin averaged 14 snaps last year as a rookie. He had 13 in the opener against Miami this season, maybe 12 against Green Bay. He has trouble getting on the field, and off it, too. The officials called Maybin for getting off the field too late at one point Sunday.
OK, the offense stinks, too. One week into his tenure, Chan Gailey benched his star rookie running back, C.J. Spiller, and gave Marshawn Lynch his most carries in a year. If the idea was to showcase Lynch, it went fairly well. Lynch rushed for 64 yards and was the only Bill with more than 40 yards of San Diego Chargers jersey
offense.
But things are grim, indeed. Gailey was expected to make this offense at least average, even entertaining. Two weeks into the new campaign, it actually looks worse. This is possibly the most wretched passing attack since the pre-Kelly days. There's no sign of it getting better any time soon.
"I don't know that I have the answers right now," Gailey said. "It's probably taking longer than I hoped that it would. But we're going to find the answers and make whatever adjustments need to be made. That's my job -- to get it fixed."
Evidently, Gailey didn't grasp the scope of the problem. There's only so much a coach can do. The organization has a multitude of woes, and most of them get back to dubious personnel decisions. James Hardy wasn't his mistake. John McCargo was an inheritance. So were Lynch and Edwards and, of course, Maybin.
That's why it was so distressing watching Matthews run wild against the Bills. The consequence of bad drafting isn't restricted to the Bills' sideline. It's everywhere you look around the NFL. They're playing linebacker in Washington, wide receiver in Philadelphia, offensive tackle in Baltimore.
Miss on enough high draft picks and eventually you sink to the bottom. If you believe the Bills needed to bottom out, take heart. This team appears to be doing that. They actually played well in the second quarter and seemed capable of an upset. The fact that they wound up losing by 27 shows you just how bad it is.
The Bills might be the worst team in the league. Yes, the defense has played commendably the first two weeks. But let's not let it off the hook entirely. It didn't have a sack or a takeaway against the Packers. It hasn't forced a turnover in two games.
Still, the offense is simply abominable. The sooner they trade Lynch, the better. Spiller has struggled badly in his first two games, but you don't take a running back at No. 9 overall to sit him on the bench. Running backs who are picked much later in the draft often become featured backs as rookies. It was wishful thinking to expect Spiller to be a force for this offense. But at the very least, he was supposed to give them an identity. Right now, they have none.
"It's very discouraging," right guard Eric Wood said. "It's terrible. Chicago Bears jersey
We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and find out who we are. Everybody needs to get better. I know I played bad. Based on our production, I'm sure a few other guys did, too. So we need to get the mistakes fixed quick or else we're going to dig ourselves a big hole here."

Quarterly Report / Mark Gaughan breaks down the game quarter-by-quarter

Cowboys jersey
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers gets a lot of praise for his great accuracy and decision-making. But the star quarterback has better athleticism and running ability than many fans realize.
Rodgers, in fact, ranked second among all NFL quarterbacks in nfl throwback jerseys
rushing yards last season with 316. He showed his mobility on Green Bay's touchdown drive. On third and 10 from the Buffalo 20, Rodgers saw no one open but sprinted upfield for a 12-yard gain. Bills safety Jairus Byrd was deep in coverage at the goal line and slipped when he saw Rodgers run. Byrd might have had a chance to stop him short of the first-down line.
The conversion was the key play in a 72-yard TD march that gave Green Bay a 13-0 lead. The drive was capped with a 1-yard run by Brandon Jackson.
Fast starts: Green Bay is used to getting ahead early. The Pack outscored opponents, 115-52, in the first quarter last year.
Truth or dare: When officials ruled Packers receiver Greg Jennings out of bounds on a pass to the Buffalo 5, Bills cornerback Drayton Florence urged the Packers to throw the challenge flag. They did. The call was upheld.
***
SECOND QUARTER / Scoring march
Green Bay opponents won't get much encouragement from watching the film of Sunday's game. The Bills did not expose any weaknesses of note in the Packers team.
The one slight tip teams with more competent offenses might glean from the Bills' attack was to run the ball at Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. It didn't work a lot for the Bills, but it was better than running away from him, because he's so good in pursuit of the ball.
The Bills mounted an eight-play, 80-yard march to their lone score with 10:49 left in the second quarter. The Bills succeeded in breaking off some power runs off tackle. Fred Jackson got a 10-yard gain around right end to the Packers' 3 on a play in which Bills tight end Jonathan Stupar sealed off Matthews with a good block.
The Bills' TD came on the next play via a 3-yard Jackson run around left end. Stupar blocked down on the left edge, and fullback Corey McIntyre took out cornerback Charles Woodson with a good block.
"We wanted to run weak [side] and we were hoping that we could get Corey up on Woodson," Jackson said. "I was able to walk in untouched."
Big cheer: The loudest roar of the first half came during the highlights of 49ers jersey
other NFL games. The scoreboard showed ex-Packer and current Vikings QB Brett Favre throwing an interception against Miami, to the delight of the fans.
***
THIRD QUARTER / Driver's seat
Packers receiver Donald Driver is one of those diamond-in-the-rough draft picks who turned into a grand-slam home run.
Driver was a seventh-round pick out of Alcorn State in 1999 but he came out of the small-college ranks with a ton of athletic ability. Driver was an Olympic hopeful as a collegian in the high jump. His best mark in the event was 7 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
Twelve years later, Driver is Green Bay's all-time receptions leader. The 35-year-old receiver had four catches Sunday to bring his career total to 656. He caught a 7-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give Green Bay a 20-7 lead. It was the 51st of his career, moving him into the fourth spot in Packers history.
Driver, a three-time Pro Bowler, is one of only two NFL receivers to have 1,000 yards in receptions each of the previous six seasons. The other is Indianapolis' Reggie Wayne.
Key plays: Green Bay had to march only 39 yards to the Driver TD after an interception by Brandon Chillar. ... Rodgers scored on a 9-yard run to give the Pack a 27-7 lead.
***
FOURTH QUARTER / Climbing the walls
Time for some Green Bay Packers trivia: Which player invented the Lambeau Leap?
Any self-respecting Cheesehead knows the answer is LeRoy Butler, who did it for the first time in 1993. It was a spontaneous celebration -- a leap over the roughly 6-foot-high wall around the field -- after Butler ran 25 yards with a lateral for a touchdown in a December game against the Raiders. That game clinched the playoffs for the Pack and ended a 10-year non-playoff drought for the franchise. Ever since, every Packer who scores a touchdown vaults into the stands. James Jones did it in the fourth quarter after a 30-yard TD catch.
Aaron Rodgers had a tough time getting up the wall after his third-quarter TD.
Said Rodgers: "The guys were giving me a hard time on the Saints jersey
sideline but I said, 'Look, I was tired. That was a long way to run, my calves are cramping and that wall's pretty high.'"
Full house: The game was the 286th straight sellout at Lambeau Field, dating to the first game of the 1960 season. That streak withstood a stretch of 17 non-winning seasons over a 22-year span from 1970 to '91.

JETS' VETS GET SERIOUS EARLY

Cowboys jersey
The Jets are in danger of falling two games behind the Patriots in the AFC East with a loss to New England today, a fact not lost on some of the team's veterans.
"That's the thing that lot of people are pointing to, our football jerseys
first three games - Baltimore, New England, Miami," Jets right tackle Damien Woody said. "Everyone really wants to see how we're going to perform in those first three games. It's almost like the perception is our season is make-or-break in those first three games."
In the wake of the Jets clearly beating themselves in the loss the Baltimore, Woody said the next couple of opponents present problems because they likely won't beat themselves.
"We've got really good coaching in our division," Woody said. "When you play teams that are well coached, they don't make a lot of mistakes. Teams like New England and Miami . . . don't tend to make a lot of mistakes."
*** The Patriots signed former Jets running back/wide Bears jersey
receiver Danny Woodhead to their 53-man roster, according to multiple reports. Terms of the contract were not announced.
The Jets waived Woodhead, a third-year player out of Chadron State, on Tuesday.
*** One player to keep an eye on today is Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery, who's had some of the finest performance of his career against the Patriots. In 13 games against New England - the most of any Jets offensive player - Cotchery has 46 catches for 745 yards (a 16.2-yard average) and five touchdowns.
*** Jets right guard Brandon Moore said he believes Bills jersey
"the confidence is still there" on offense.
"We don't think [Monday's night performance] was us. That was something we're definitely not proud of," Moore said. "You have to look at that and move forward and get better from there."

Red Sox rout Rays

Cowboys jersey
BOSTON (AP) -- Ryan Kalish hit a grand slam, David Ortiz had a two-run shot and Jon Lester pitched six solid innings to lead the Boston Red Sox over Tampa Bay 12-5 Monday night, preventing the Rays from climbing closer in the AL East race.
Adrian Beltre added a solo homer for Boston, swept in a three-game series by the Chicago White Sox last weekend.
The Rays lost their third straight and remained 2 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Yankees, who lost to Baltimore 4-3 earlier in the day.
Boston moved within 6 1/2 games of cheap nfl jerseys
Tampa Bay in the wild-card standings.
Lester (16-8) gave up two runs and four hits while striking out 10 and walking three for his fifth win in six decisions.
Boston took control by scoring three runs in each of the first two innings, and broke it open when Kalish hit his slam in a five-run fourth.
Ortiz and Beltre hit consecutive homers three pitches apart in the first to put the Red Sox ahead 3-1.
In the second, Victor Martinez had a two-run single to chase Jeff Niemann (10-6). Ortiz greeted Andy Sonnanstine with a double off the Green Monster, making it 6-1.
Niemann got just five outs, getting tagged for six runs, four hits and three walks. He's been roughed up in all three starts since coming off the disabled list from a strained shoulder on Aug. 25, allowing 23 runs in 16 2-3 innings.
Boston turned it into a rout by adding five off Sonnanstine in the fourth. After loading the bases on singles by Daniel Nava and J.D. Drew and a two-out intentional walk to Beltre, Sonnanstine walked Jed Lowrie to force home a run before Kalish belted his slam into the Rays' bullpen in right, making it 11-2. It was his second grand slam of Colts jersey
the season, tying a club record for rookies held by six others.
The Rays scored three runs in the seventh to cut it to 11-5 against reliever Robert Coello, making his major league debut. Scott Atchison came in and got Reid Brignac and Rocco Baldelli to pop out to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Coello gave up three hits and two walks while retiring just one batter.
Carl Crawford's RBI single gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the first.
NOTES: Bob Zupcic was the previous Red Sox rookie with two grand slams in a season, doing it in 1992. ... Red Sox manager Terry Francona didn't come right out and say it, but he indicated that All-Star RHP Clay Buchholz will pitch Wednesday only if Boston wins the first two games of the three-game series. "I think we reserve the right to see how we do," he said. "I think it's obvious what I'm saying there. The plan now is to pitch Buch." ... Carlos Pena is 0 for 19 since homering in consecutive games Aug. 29 and 30. ... The Rays recalled Sonnanstine before the game from Class-A Hudson Valley. He was sent down to make room for OF Brad Hawpe on Aug. 31. ... Boston SS Marco Scutaro is scheduled to have an MRI on his right shoulder Tuesday. It's been bothering him for about a month. ... Boston recalled C Cowboys jersey
Jason Varitek, who was on the DL with a broken right foot since July 2, after a two-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. ... The Red Sox honored former RHP Luis Tiant for his upcoming 70th birthday. They gave him a watch and he threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former players Johnny Pesky and Dwight Evans were among those on hand.

SORIANO'S LATEST FEAT IS FLAWLESS

Cowboys jersey
Rafael Soriano was effective in closing out Monday's 4-3 win over the Angels. And certainly efficient.
But most of all, he was immaculate.
Soriano became the 41st pitcher in major-league history to football jersey
strike out the side on the minimum nine pitches, and just the third to get a save as he recorded what is called an Immaculate Inning.
"I didn't know that," Soriano said Tuesday. "I didn't know until you told me that it was a big deal."
Some of the game's biggest-name pitchers are on the list, including three Hall of Famers who did it twice in their careers - Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan - plus Bob Gibson and Jim Bunning.
And there are some other names that make it appear a random collection, including ex- Rays Brandon Backe and Jason Isringhausen, and journeymen such as Buddy Carlyle and Rick Helling.
As Soriano was making history against the Angels on Monday, his bullpen mates - as they realized what he was doing - watched in amazement as he got Erick Aybar, Mike Napoli and rookie Peter Bourjos all swinging at strike three, and recorded his major-league-leading 38th save while doing so.
"Unbelievable. I was kind of giddy out there," Dan Wheeler said. "That was impressive, really impressive. I joked with him after the game, 'That was efficient - don't be afraid to mix in a ball.'"
"It's definitely a cool thing," Randy Choate said. "The guy's done everything else this year, so why not just put something else on the list."
Catcher Kelly Shoppach knew Soriano hadn't thrown any balls, but he didn't initially realize he was party to a newsworthy event.
"That's awesome," Shoppach said. "I didn't know how rare it was. That's pretty unbelievable."
Soriano had good command and velocity of his fastball on Monday, and Steelers jersey
obviously good control. But Shoppach said he may have had something else working.
"He gave up a run the last time out," Shoppach said. "So generally that happens. He probably had (an attitude)."
Manager Joe Maddon said he could tell from Soriano's first pitch - even though it was his third consecutive day of work - that he was going to be on.
"I just thought he came out sharp location, sharp velocity," Maddon said. "There wasn't the 88-90 (mph), it was 92, where he wanted it to be, 93. ...
"This guy as a closer is different in the sense that he pitches. He just doesn't go out there and try to rush a fastball by somebody; he pitches, he locates, he knows what he's doing.
"He just had exceptional command. Some of those pitches were out of the (strike) zone (but) he made guys chase."
The only others to do so while getting a save were LaTroy Hawkins for the Cubs, against the Marlins, on Sept.11, 2004, and Mel Rojas for the Expos, against the Mets, on May 11, 1994, though he pitched two innings.
Soriano was the first pitcher to do it this season. Pittsburgh's Ross Ohlendorf Vikings jersey
did it on Sept.5, 2009, against St. Louis, and the last in the American League was New York's A.J. Burnett, on June 20, 2009, against Florida.
Soriano is the first Ray to log an Immaculate Inning, though former Rays minor-leaguer Chris Mason did it for Double-A Montgomery in 2007.

Phillies Notes: Catcher Hoover to get call

Cowboys jersey
LOS ANGELES - Paul Hoover will be the first of what is expected to be a handful of September call-ups to boost the Phillies' roster during a pennant race.
Hoover, a catcher, will be the lone player to be added to the team as major-league rosters officially expand Wednesday. Hoover will serve as the team's third catcher.
In recent weeks, Charlie Manuel has pinch-hit for his starting catcher (whether it be Carlos Ruiz or Brian Schneider) during games, so it's not a stretch to say Hoover might be needed at some point. But mainly, he'll provide emergency insurance.
The Phillies chose Hoover over Dane Sardinha. Both were on nfl jerseys
the big-league team earlier in the season.
"Hoover caught a little bit more in spring training," Manuel said. "That was really close. Both did a really good job when they were up here. I feel like we know Hoover just a little bit more. We didn't need two. That was real close."
In six games with the Phillies earlier this season, Hoover hit .278 with two doubles and two RBIs. The 34-year-old catcher has played seven seasons in the majors.
Hoover left triple-A Lehigh Valley with an eight-game hitting streak and was hitting .385 in his last 12 games. In 77 games with the IronPigs, he hit .247 with two home runs and 21 RBIs.
Hoover was also a call-up last season. He had the game-winning single on the final day of the season in 2009, a 7-6 win over the Marlins.
The Phillies are likely to make a few more moves when the team returns home Friday. Greg Dobbs, who has struggled all season while being designated for assignment twice, will be one of those players.
One of the starters for Monday's doubleheader against Florida also will come from the minor leagues.
Barajas kills Rod Barajas was in the starting lineup for the San Francisco 49ers jersey
Dodgers again Tuesday, and why not? The catcher absolutely kills the Phillies.
Since he departed Philadelphia after the 2007 season, Barajas is hitting .514 (18 for 35) with eight home runs and 19 RBIs in 11 games against the Phils. That's a 1.314 slugging percentage.
His eighth bomb came off Roy Halladay on Monday night.
"I knew he had some," Manuel said. "I didn't know he had that many."
Barajas has 34 home runs in 297 games against everyone else. He has cemented his status as Phillie killer.
Is there an explanation?
"My best answer for that," Manuel said, "probably would be we're due to get him out."
Injury updates Ross Gload (strained right groin) will begin his rehab assignment for single-A Clearwater on Wednesday. He is expected to play two games, and if all goes well, he'll be activated Friday when he is eligible to come off the disabled list.
Righthander Danys Baez (back spasms) is also in Clearwater and did some long tossing Monday. He will continue his throwing program.
Extra bases The Phillies will send at least seven prospects to the Arizona Fall League. Righthanders Tyson Brummett, Justin De Fratus, Chris Kissock, B.J. Rosenberg, Josh Zeid, catcher Tim Kennelly and first baseman Matt Rizzotti will play for manager Mark Parent (who manages single-A Lakewood). There is also an eighth Buffalo Bills jersey
to-be-announced spot for an outfielder. . . . Righthander Austin Hyatt was named Florida State League pitcher of the year. Hyatt was 11-5 with a 3.04 ERA along with 156 strikeouts and 35 walks for single-A Clearwater. The 15th-round pick in 2009 has since been promoted to double-A Reading, where he is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in four starts.

Hunter gets the ball Sunday at Safeco Field

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The Texas Rangers keep inching toward their first AL West title since 1999. Pitching on seven days’ rest, Tommy Hunter(notes) looks to move the Rangers even closer.
Hunter gets the ball Sunday at Safeco Field, where the division-leading nfl jersey
Rangers try to win their second straight over the Seattle Mariners.
After last-place Seattle (56-92) snapped its seven-game winning streak Friday, Texas (83-64) lowered its magic number to six Saturday as Cliff Lee(notes) threw eight innings in a 6-1 victory over his former teammates. The Rangers lead the West by 10 games over Oakland with 15 to play.
“To have Cliff pitch the way he did (Saturday), that’s huge,” Texas outfielder Jeff Francoeur(notes) said. “At the end of the day, he’s that guy that’s going to go toe to toe with a couple of the other No. 1’s when we continue to get closer to clinching the playoffs. When we get to October that’s what we need is the type of performance he had (Saturday).”
With Lee moving up a spot in the rotation to be in line to start the playoff opener, Hunter (12-3, 3.97 ERA) will take the ball on three extra days of rest. After surrendering three homers and seven runs in his previous outing - a 7-2 loss at Toronto on Sept. 6 - the right-hander struck out a career-high eight and yielded two runs in Chicago Bears jersey
five innings of a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Sept. 11.
Hunter, who is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two starts against the Mariners this season, will try to once again take advantage of a Seattle offense that ranks last in the majors in home runs (92), batting average (.234) and runs per game (3.2).
Doug Fister(notes) (5-12, 3.95), who will start the series finale for the Mariners, doesn’t need to be reminded of his team’s offensive struggles. The right-hander receives among the lowest run support averages in the AL at 4.13.
Despite giving up five runs and six hits over 7 1-3 innings of Monday’s 5-1 loss to Boston, Fister retired 12 straight at one point.
“I thought he pitched well,” interim manager Daren Brown told the Mariners’ official web site. “(He made) just a couple of mistakes.”
Fister, 0-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts against Texas this season, could be in for a rough outing if he makes mistakes against the Rangers, who are batting .296 and averaging 6.4 runs while winning eight of nine.
Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz(notes), 3 for 5 against Fister, is batting . New Orleans Saints jersey
405 (17 for 42) with four homers and six RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.
Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki(notes) recorded his 3,500th professional hit Saturday - 1,278 came in Japan - and is seven shy of becoming the first player in AL history with 10 seasons of at least 200 hits. Suzuki is 8 for 20 against Hunter.
Texas has won 11 of 15 in the season series with Seattle.

A perpetual victim of poor run support

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The San Francisco Giants are no longer atop the NL West following another sluggish offensive performance.
The failure to score runs should come as no surprise to Barry Zito(notes).
A perpetual victim of nfl throwback jerseys
poor run support, Zito looks to avoid losing his eighth straight game and help the Giants bounce back from their latest defeat in Sunday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers.
With San Francisco (83-66) losing to the Brewers 2-1 on Saturday, coupled with San Diego’s 8-4 win in St. Louis, the Giants fell out of first place in the NL West, one-half game back of the Padres. San Francisco, which is also just one-half game ahead of surging Colorado, is two games behind Atlanta for the wild card.
Pitching has carried the Giants during the stretch run, posting a major league-best 1.64 ERA this month and yielding three runs or fewer in each of the last 13 games.
The team has been unable to take full advantage, however, plating two runs or fewer in six of the last eight games. Pablo Sandoval(notes) is enduring particularly rough times, batting .105 with two RBIs in his last 13 games.
“I do think we’re trying to do too much, overswinging a little bit,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “We’ve got to calm down a little bit. I know they all want to be the guy.”
San Francisco managed five hits Saturday after being limited to three singles in Friday’s 3-0 loss to Milwaukee (69-78), but one of the team’s most embarrassing offensive showings came in Zito’s last start.
Zito and four relievers combined to one-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saints jersey
Tuesday, but the Giants mustered just four hits of their own and lost 1-0. Zito pitched 5 2-3 innings, allowing the hit and the lone run, which scored on shortstop Juan Uribe’s(notes) two-out error in the sixth.
Zito lost his career-high seventh straight game - a stretch that includes a loss in relief - and has dropped a career-worst nine consecutive decisions since beating the New York Mets on July 16.
Although Zito has a 5.00 ERA without a victory in his last 12 outings, he isn’t entirely to blame. The Giants have backed the left-hander with 11 total runs of support, including five starts in which they didn’t score for Zito at all.
Despite all of its struggles, San Francisco’s offense had no trouble earlier this season against Chris Narveson(notes) (11-7, 5.05), Milwaukee’s scheduled starter Sunday.
Narveson was shelled for a career-worst 10 runs and nine hits - including homers by Andres Torres(notes), Aubrey Huff(notes) and Buster Posey(notes) - in 3 1-3 innings of a 15-2 loss July 7.
He has been one of Milwaukee’s top pitchers lately, however, going 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last four starts and yielding three earned runs or fewer in each of his last nine. In Houston on Monday, the left-hander allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings, but didn’t receive a decision in a 4-2 loss.
Zito was shaky in his lone start of San Diego Chargers jersey
the season against Milwaukee on July 8, allowing two runs, seven hits and six walks in 4 2-3 innings of San Franciso’s eventual 9-3 win. He hasn’t gotten credit for defeating the Brewers since his first outing against them in 2002, a span of seven starts.

LaPorta’s grand slam powers Indians past Royals

Dallas Cowboys jersey
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Matt LaPorta’s(notes) first career grand slam powered the Cleveland Indians past the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on a long, stormy Saturday night that included four rain delays totaling 3 hours and 40 minutes.
The game, scheduled for a 6:10 p.m. start, did not end until 12:47 a.m. Actual game time was 2 hours, 57 minutes. The crowd had thinned out so much by the eighth inning the cleaning crew was already at work in the upper deck.
LaPorta’s grand slam off Sean O’Sullivan(notes) (2-6) gave Cleveland a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Then Jai Miller(notes) and Mike Aviles(notes) hit two-run homers for Kansas City in the fifth off Justin Germano(notes).
The rain delay in the top of football jerseys the fourth lasted only 2 minutes. Umpires signaled for the grounds crew to roll out the tarp, but suddenly the rain stopped and the confused youngsters were told to put the tarp back, eliciting laughter from a sparse crowd of Royals fans who’ve had little to laugh about this season.
Joe Smith(notes) (2-2), the third of six Cleveland pitchers, pitched one inning and gave up two hits but no runs and was the winner. Chris Perez(notes) pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 25 opportunities.
O’Sullivan retired the first nine batters but seemed to lose something during the 2-minute delay. Michael Brantley(notes) singled leading off the fourth, stretching his hitting streak to 18 games, then Asdrubal Cabrera(notes) and Shin-Soo Choo(notes) singled.
Brantley scored on Choo’s single and Shelly Duncan’s single loaded the bases for LaPorta. The 25-year-old first baseman hit O’Sullivan’s 2-1 pitch over the fence in center for Cleveland’s second slam in two days off the struggling Kansas City staff.
It was the 11th loss in 15 games for KC and dropped the last-place Royals 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central.
Brantley’s 18-game streak is the longest current run in the majors and the longest by a Cleveland rookie since Larry Doby hit in 21 straight in 1948.
Germano replaced starter Justin Masterson(notes) after a delay of Bills jersey
1 hour, 23 minutes with one out in the fourth. He hit Lucas May(notes) leading off the bottom of the fifth and Miller slammed an 0-2 pitch for his first major league home run.
The next batter, Jarrod Dyson(notes), doubled off the wall and Aviles slammed an offering from Germano 409 feet for another two-run shot that pared the lead to 5-4 as light rain began again to fall.
Jayson Nix’s(notes) RBI single made it 6-4 in the eighth.
Germano went 2 2-3 innings and gave up four runs on three hits and one hit batter.
O’Sullivan went four innings and was charged with five runs and six hits.
The first three delays, including 36 minutes to start, had totaled 2 hours, 1 minute when play was halted after the Royals made the final out in the sixth. The game was resumed after another wait of 1 hour, 39 minutes.
NOTES: Brantley’s 18-game streak is the 49ers jersey
longest by an Indian since Casey Blake(notes) hit in 26 straight in May-June 2007. … If the Indians win on Sunday and sweep the Royals, KC will get a chance to climb back out of the cellar in a four-game series in Cleveland Sept. 23-27. It will be Royals’ last road series of the season. … Dyson made an outstanding leaping catch at the wall in center field of Duncan’s drive in the fifth.

Corinthians win top-of-table clash with Fluminense

Indianapolis Colts jersey
RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Corinthians took a big step in their bid to win the Brazilian championship in their centenary year with a 2-1 away win over leaders Fluminense on Wednesday.
The second-placed team from Sao Paulo moved within a goal of nfl jersey
Flu, who just managed to protect their better goal difference with a late strike by Washington.
“The weight (of the defeat) is very heavy,” said Washington, the championship’s leading scorer with 10 goals.
“The least we should have done, playing at home, was to maintain our (three) points difference from them.”
After 22 matches Flu and Corinthians, who have a game in hand, are on 41 points. Cruzeiro have 40 and Botafogo 37.
Despite the importance of the match, only 20,000 turned up at Botafogo’s Enganhao ground which Fluminense have been obliged to use after the giant Maracana was closed for 2014 World Cup refurbishments.
Corinthians, having to do without injured former Brazil striker Ronaldo (thigh), opened the scoring shortly before halftime after midfielder Jucilei controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed it past goalkeeper Fernando Henrique.
With Flu opening up in search of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
an equaliser, the visitors increased their lead in a counter-attack 20 minutes into the second half when fullback Alessandro crossed from the right to striker Iarley, who steered the ball in.
Washington pulled one back five minutes later for Flu.
Flu midfielder Deco, a recent recruit from Chelsea, had a disappointing game against the side that launched him to fame.
The championship race was made tighter by Cruzeiro’s 4-2 win over Guarani, their fifth victory in a row, putting them a point behind the top two in third place.
Botafogo remain in fourth, three points further back despite a 4-1 defeat away to lowly Goias.
At the other end of the standings, champions Flamengo scored through Toro Dallas Cowboys jersey
four minutes into stoppage time for their first victory in seven matches, a 2-1 win over Gremio Prudente.
The win moved Flamengo away from the relegation zone to 14th, 15 points off the pace.

Ibrahimovic gives Milan 2-0 victory in Champions League

Indianapolis Colts jersey
MILAN, Italy (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic got off the mark for AC Milan with a brace to down Auxerre 2-0 in the Champions League at San Siro on Wednesday.
The 24-million-euro signing, who missed a penalty on his debut away to Cesena on nfl throwback jerseys
Saturday, started to pay back his big fee as he netted twice in the second half in a game that had been evenly poised until then.
Auxerre had frustrated the hosts until the mid-point of the second period and in fact come closer to scoring, but Milan's superior class told in the end in their first Group G encounter.
In netting, Ibrahimovic matched Hernan Crespo's record of having scored for five different clubs in the Champions League.
The hosts almost shot themselves in the foot on five minutes as Andrea Pirlo was dispossesed in the box by Valter Birsa with the ball breaking to Steeven Langil, but he didn't really get hold of his shot from an angle and Christian Abbiati made a comfortable save.
Milan's first chance came on 20 minutes with a Pirlo free-kick that goalkeeper Olivier Sorin strangely punched clear when it looked easy to catch the ball.
But the hosts had an escape moments later as Kenyan Dennis Oliech's towering header from Benoit Pedretti's corner came back off the bar.
At the other end Ronaldinho's impudent backheel released the overlapping Luca Antonini who pulled the ball back for Kevin-Prince Boateng—on as an early substitute for injured captain Massimo Ambrosini—but his shot and Alexandre Pato's follow-up were both blocked by sprawling bodies.
The French visitors should have gone into the break in the lead after a lightning counter-attack but Langil opted to shoot despite three team-mates waiting for a Minnesota Vikings jersey
pull-back and he blazed his effort wildly over the bar.
The rossoneri were quickly on the attack after the restart, Ronaldinho playing an inviting cross into the box that Pato could only prod into Sorin's grateful arms.
Pirlo followed that up with a daisy-cutter that Sorin tipped around the post.
When the first goal came on 66 minutes it showed the difference in quality between the two teams.
Ronaldinho curled the ball into the area and Boateng made a diagonal run to glance the ball into Ibrahimovic's path six yards out, from where he couldn't miss.
Ibrahimovic took the plaudits from the fans but tellingly Pirlo ran up to congratulate Boateng, whose vision had proved decisive.
Three minutes later Auxerre got caught pushing for the equaliser as Ronaldinho ran at the heart of their defence and slipped the ball left to Ibrahimovic, who curled it inside the far post.
Boateng missed a chance to open his Milan account as he ran onto another delightful Ronaldinho cross, but he couldn't make clean contact.
Oliech should have set up a grandstand finale after a neat one-two Indianapolis Colts jersey
with Ireneusz Jelen but he went for the near post and Abbiati got down well to save.
Jelen then had the ball in the net but was clearly offside.
Ibrahimovic's fellow new boy Robinho had two late chances to get himself on the scoresheet but seemed to lack sharpness.

Cook, Griffin practice for Vikings

Colts jersey
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook returned to practice on Wednesday, but is still unsure if he'll be ready to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
Cook missed the season opener after having surgery to repair a torn football jerseys
meniscus in his right knee. The team figured he would miss about two weeks, but coach Brad Childress says he will watch to see how the rookie practices this week before making a determination.
The same goes for cornerback Cedric Griffin, who is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in the NFC title game in January.
Both players practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday. Percy Harvin was Minnesota Vikings jersey
also limited with a hip injury as was defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy with a knee injury.
Eagles coach Andy Reid says quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley are making progress, though neither has passed the next phase of their concussion testing.
Reid wouldn't rule either player out for Philadelphia's game against Detroit on Sunday, but it would seem unlikely they could play.
The NFL has strict return-to-play guidelines for players who show concussion symptoms. Neither Indianapolis Colts jersey
player will practice Wednesday and they won't even be allowed to attend meetings until they pass the next test.
Both players briefly returned after getting hurt in Sunday's 27-20 loss to Green Bay.
Reid says the team is following the league's protocol.

Dolphins-Vikings Preview

Colts jersey
Returning to the Metrodome could help the Minnesota Vikings bounce back from a disappointing performance, and keep the Miami Dolphins from their best start since 2002.
After earning their first season-opening victory in five years, the Dolphins have the unenviable task of nfl jerseys
trying to hand Brett Favre his first home loss in a Vikings uniform Sunday.
Minnesota entered this season with hopes of reaching its first Super Bowl in 34 years, but that quest got off to a rocky start with a 14-9 loss in New Orleans last Thursday.
In a rematch of last year's NFC championship game at the Superdome, the Vikings (0-1) failed to score in the second half and finished with 253 yards - far below their 379.6 average in 2009.
A lack of time together in the preseason could have been partly to blame. Favre didn't return to begin his second season with the team until Aug. 17, and he finished 15 of 27 for 171 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
"It's obvious we could be a lot better," Favre said. "I thought our timing was a little bit off."
The Vikings are missing Favre's top target from last season, Sidney Rice, because of hip surgery. Rice's replacement, Greg Camarillo, came over in a trade with Miami on Aug. 25, and fellow receiver Percy Harvin missed time during the preseason with recurring major migraine headaches. Harvin and Camarillo each had only one reception last Thursday.
Harvin, whose heart stopped beating twice after he collapsed during a practice last month, might have found the cause of those headaches as he was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. He said he hasn't had a migraine since being hospitalized Aug. 19.
Center John Sullivan also sat out most of the preseason with a calf injury.
"It's a work in progress on offense," coach Brad Childress said. "It's from a number of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
different spots, just getting your center back, your wideouts or your quarterback. We need to get up to speed in a heck of a hurry. I believe we will."
Playing at home could help Favre get back up to speed. Minnesota won all nine games at the Metrodome last season, including a playoff victory over Dallas, as Favre had 25 touchdown passes and two interceptions. He had a 120.7 passer rating in those games, compared to 92.2 on the road.
Favre has the Vikings riding their longest home winning streak since a 12-game run from Oct. 24, 1999-Nov. 30, 2000. They've lost just once in their last 15 games at the Metrodome.
Miami (1-0) hasn't played there since 2002 - the last time it started a season 2-0 - and has lost all three of its trips to Minnesota since 1979.
The Dolphins won on the road in their opener, 15-10 at Buffalo, but now begin a difficult stretch. This game with the Vikings is the first of four straight against 2009 playoff teams for Miami, which hosts the New York Jets and New England before traveling to Green Bay.
"Any time you get the taste of victory the first week, it's going to boost your confidence," cornerback Jason Allen said. "We're even more hungry to have that taste again."
Last Sunday, Miami got its usual solid rushing from Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, who combined for 127 yards and a touchdown. Chad Henne was mostly efficient in going 21 of 34 for 182 yards and no interceptions.
The Dolphins, though, relied on a defense that gave up an NFL-low 166 yards in the opening week and nine first downs. However, they know a tougher test is in store this week.
"Now we have a bigger thing with Minnesota," linebacker Channing Crowder said. "They have a lot more playmakers than the Bills have."
The Dolphins are expected to be Indianapolis Colts jersey
without starting defensive end Jared Odrick for one or two games. Odrick, the 28th overall pick in this year's draft, suffered a slight hairline fracture in his right leg last week.
Miami has won six of 10 all-time meetings between the teams, including a 24-7 victory in Super Bowl VIII. The Dolphins took the previous matchup 24-20 on Nov. 19, 2006.

No spies needed: Redskins, Texans know each other

Colts jersey
Mike Shanahan's son used to baby-sit Gary Kubiak's sons.
That's only one of many connections between the cheap nfl jerseys
Washington Redskins and Houston Texans. No need to hire a spy to infiltrate the other team's camp: Both sides already have plenty of inside information as they put together their game plans for Sunday's meeting.
''They know what I like; I know what they like,'' said babysitter-turned-assistant Kyle Shanahan, now the Redskins offensive coordinator after spending the last four years on the Texans staff. ''They know what I don't think is good that they do, and vice versa. We've gone against (that defense) every day for four years.
''There's no secret about what we like to do against each other.''
Ten of the coaches on the sidelines Sunday were members of the Denver Broncos coaching staff in 2002.
Houston coach Kubiak and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan have a working relationship that goes back to 1985, when Kubiak was a quarterback and Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the Broncos.
Texans' offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, defensive coordinator Frank Bush and three other Houston assistants were on the staff when Mike Shanahan was head coach in Denver. Meanwhile, Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur are among four Redskins assistants who have served under Kubiak with the Texans.
Then there's also Rex Grossman, the backup quarterback who followed Kyle Shanahan from Texas to Washington this year.
Needless to say, the mind games are under way.
''In sports, especially in football in particular, any advantage that you can have, you're going to use,'' Washington linebacker London Fletcher said. ''If it's just one tip in a certain situation, you're going to use that, and it can be the difference in winning the Dallas Cowboys jersey
football game. And we obviously have a strong knowledge of what they want to do with Kyle being over there the last few years, so it helps us.''
Kyle Shanahan turned the Texans into a prolific ball-moving machine, and he has brought the same offense to Washington. The offense he left behind has stayed pretty much the same as well, although it appears even more potent after Arian Foster's 231-yard performance in Houston's opening day win over the Indianapolis Colts.
''I'll be watching them pretty closely, and hopefully I won't be screaming from the sideline too much on what the play is going to be,'' Houston right tackle Eric Winston said. ''I know what they teach those offensive linemen, and how they're going to line up. I'm sure they know the same thing about us.''
Mike Shanahan watched a lot of football during his year off last season after he was fired by the Broncos, but he obviously paid special attention to the Texans because of his son and the other familiar faces on the staff. He went to two games in person and watched all the other Houston games on video.
''Any time you go against somebody that you know really well, I'm not sure either team has an advantage,'' the elder Shanahan said. ''I know them; they know me.''
If anything, the coach said, it's possible to get too caught up in trying to outfox a well-known foe.
''Sometimes that's true,'' Mike Shanahan said. ''You get a game plan that gives you the best chance to win, and I think sometimes you do over-think it.''
Although they go back a ways, Shanahan and Indianapolis Colts jersey
Kubiak aren't exchanging any friendly banter ahead of the game. No use accidentally spilling any more secrets.
''No, we won't talk,'' Kubiak said. ''Heck, neither one of us likes to talk much anyway, so we'll talk after the game.''

Jets cut Danny Woodhead, sign David Clowney

Eagles place two on I.R.; sign two

Dallas Cowboys jersey

The Eagles licked their wounds on Monday, as the team made a series of roster moves after losing multiple players (and the game) in Week One vs. the Packers.
FB Leonard Weaver(notes) and C Jamaal Jackson(notes) were placed on nfl jersey
injured reserve after going down in the season opener. Weaver tore ligaments in his left knee, and Jackson suffered a torn triceps.
In their places, the Eagles have signed FB Owen Schmitt(notes) and Indianapolis Colts jersey
TE Garrett Mills(notes). Schmitt played with the Seahawks in 2008 and '09, starting 15 games each season. He is not the runner and receiver Weaver is, but he's a serviceable blocker. Mills last played for the Vikings in 2008, catching five passes in eight games.
The way we see it
The pressure is now on the rest of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the Eagles' offensive linemen to protect whoever is playing QB for Philadelphia. Jackson was injured at the end of last season and missed much of summer workouts, so reserve Mike McGlynn(notes) should be somewhat comfortable at center.

Eagles sign Owen Schmitt

The Eagles promoted practice squad tight end Garrett Mills(notes) to the active roster as they placed center Jamaal Jackson(notes) (torn triceps) and Weaver on injured reserve.

In 30 career games, Schmitt has caught 12 passes for 50 yards Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

All-star game headed Sens’ way?

Dallas Cowboys jersey

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has a scheduled meeting with Ottawa Senators brass next week and he could be bringing a star attraction to the party.
Bettman could grant Ottawa the 2011-12 all-star game in cheap nfl jerseys
January 2012. The 2010-11 game has already been given to the Carolina Hurricanes.
If the announcement is made during Bettman's Sept. 15 luncheon at the Château Laurier with Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and general manager Bryan Murray, it won't come as a complete surprise. The Senators have been on the shortlist to play host to the three-day event for several seasons, after Bettman promised Melnyk that the NHL would accept Ottawa's bid once the league's previous commitments to other franchises had been fulfilled.
The one major roadblock that stood in the Senators way—a shortage of convention space—should be cleared up next year. The new Ottawa Convention Centre on Colonel By Drive, currently under construction, is scheduled to open next April.
The Senators submitted their plan to host the 2011-12 game last February and city council pledged $200,000 to help finance the bid.
"This is just as big as the Grey Cup," Orléans councillor Bob Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Monette said at the time.
Senators president Cyril Leeder also suggested in Feburary that the Senators success with previous NHL events—a scaled-down entry draft in 2005 following the lockout and a full-scale draft in 2008 —also put the Senators at the top of list for the all-star game.
"The chances are excellent," Leeder said. "We've got a great bid. We've bid on different events and I've just got a good feeling about this one."
While the highlight of the weekend is the all-star game itself, the three-day event also includes fan festivals that are typically spread out around the host city.
"We think it would be a great event for the community, both from a hockey perspective with the fans and all the stars here," Leeder said in February.
"I've attended the last three and Montreal (in 2009) was the one I enjoyed the most. We're the only Canadian team that hasn't hosted an all-star game yet, so we think our time has come."
If the league awards the all-star game to Ottawa in 2012, it would represent a fitting 20th anniversary present. The Senators returned to the NHL for the 1992-93 season.
Phil Legault, the Senators vice-president of Indianapolis Colts jersey
communications, confirmed Monday night that Bettman will be in Ottawa for a hot stove-style luncheon with team sponsors, but said that any league announcements must come from the NHL.
When reached Monday, Frank Brown, the NHL's vice-president of media relations, had no comment.

Nikolai Khabibulin is healthy, ready to play

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin(notes) is appealing a DUI conviction sentence while recovering from January surgery to fix a herniated disk in his back. So maybe attending training camp is the best way to put it all behind him.
His agent believes that, if football jersey
nothing else, the tumultuous year could provide extra motivation for the 37-year-old, who is in the second of a four-year, $15 million contract he signed last summer.
“He’s coming back and one thing I know about Nik, when his back is to the wall he’s always come up to the task,” agent Jay Grossman told Sporting News. “Despite a lot of achievement in his career, he still has something to prove.”
According to Grossman, Khabibulin has been checked out by doctors in Edmonton and is back on the ice and ready to recapture the starting job.
“He’s been skating and he’s a guy who keeps himself in really good shape,” Grossman said. “We’re obviously hopeful that he doesn’t have any problems going forward.”
Mark DuBiel, Khabibulin’s lawyer, immediately served notice that Khabibulin’s 30-day sentence would be appealed, freeing him to attend camp when it opens next week. But Khabibulin’s decision to appeal — rather than get the jail time out of way before the regular season Dallas Cowboys jersey
— has drawn criticism from those who think it could become a distraction.
But the way the appeal process works, it’s also possible it could drag on beyond the regular season—meaning he might not miss any playing time at all.
Grossman declined comment on the appeal, other than to say the team has been supportive of Khabibulin’s decision.
“We had really good support from people in Indianapolis Colts jersey
the Oilers organization,” Grossman said. “They understood all along he had the right to appeal and that it was his decision.”
In 18 games last season, Khabibulin was 7-9-2 with a 3.03 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

Washington State tries to tackle poor defensive fundamentals

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

PULLMAN — If there were one thing everyone agreed on after Washington State's shocking 65-17 season-opening loss at Oklahoma State was the Cougars' tackling was ... well, let them describe it.
"We were horrible, we were absolutely terrible," said football jersey
coach Paul Wulff.
"It was the worst part of our defense. We pride ourselves on our tackling ability," said senior defensive end Kevin Kooyman, "and we tackled poorly, very poorly."
"We didn't tackle," co-defensive coordinator Chris Ball said.
"Basically, you've got to get in position," said linebacker Myron Beck, a senior who had four tackles Saturday and has 79 in his WSU career. "You've got to run to the near hip and don't break your feet, don't stop, don't round off your angle. Your pursuit angle is like the most important thing."
And if you miss?
"Grab them and hold on," Beck said. "Anyway you can. YIndianapolis Colts jersey
ou've got to grab cloth. Hold on, stay clamped."
Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter gashed the Cougars for 257 yards rushing, around 130 of them coming after a missed tackle according to linebackers coach Travis Niekamp. He also scored four times, part of eight OSU offensive plays that ended without a tackle.
"He had great balance," Beck said of Hunter. "We would hit him and just bounce off. Everybody was going for the big hit instead of staying clamped and getting him down.
"It was frustrating because we were there. We turned 2-yard gains into 45-yard gains or 20-yard gains, just by not staying clamped. It was frustrating to see how many yards we could have prevented if we had just gotten him down."
For the game, WSU missed 21 tackles and had a tackling rate of 75 percent. The Cougars' goal in each game is 90 percent.
"We've seen it in film," Beck said. "When we attack the line of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
scrimmage and we attack the ball carrier, there weren't long runs. Attacking in the line of scrimmage is where it's going to be at."

Sounders FC v. Real Salt Lake, team preview/broadcast info

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

The Seattle Sounders FC and reigning MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake, two teams exhibiting great form of late, will meet in a late-season Western Conference showdown on Thursday night before a national television audience and capacity crowd on the Xbox Pitch at nfl throwback jerseys
Qwest Field. First kick is 8 p.m. PT on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.
Undefeated in its last four games against West foes, the Rave Green is seeking a fourth straight home win before beginning an odyssey of four road matches being played in three nations over 12 days. Real Salt Lake will be returning to the site of its most glorious night, last November 22, when it prevailed over the L.A. Galaxy in a shoot-out to claim its first MLS Cup.
Sounders FC (9-9-5, 32 points in league; 12-11-7 overall) has been on domestic tear, losing only once (7-1-2) in 10 games. However the next phase of matches will be most challenging.
The next two MLS games come against defending champion RSL and the Columbus Crew, winner of the last two Supporters' Shields. The resumption of CONCACAF Champions League adds three more matches this month, and there will be over 13,000 air miles flown across the U.S. and Central America by the time Seattle returns home after playing in Chicago on September 25.
Last week Sounders FC experienced mixed emotions. First came the high notes as it continued its march through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, bringing the Cup Final to Seattle on October 5 by beating Chivas USA, 3-1, at home midweek. Three days later, in New England, it Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
sustained its first MLS defeat in two months, 3-1 to the Revolution.
Real Salt Lake (12-4-7, 43 points) won, 1-0, at home against New York, tying the record of 22 consecutive home games unbeaten. Owner of an MLS-best plus-21 goal differential, RSL has been more vulnerable on the road, going 3-4-4 and drawing its last three.
Both teams have rebounded from slow starts. Real Salt Lake, after winning just one of its first five, has gone 11-1-6 since April. Not until July did Sounders FC catch fire, going 5-1-2 in its last eight outings.
Seattle seeks its first MLS win over Real since the second game of its inaugural season. The league series is tied at 1-1-1 after the sides finished level at 2-2 in Real Salt Lake's 2010 home opener on April 10. Although separated by a time zone and 691 miles, for now Salt Lake is Seattle's closest MLS neighbor.
The Utah side is second in the Western Conference, just one point behind the Galaxy and Crew in the Supporters' Shield race. Seattle is tied for fifth in the West but is currently in position to grab a wild card playoff slot.
Each team will get the weekend off before playing Dallas Cowboys jersey
Champions League dates to begin next week. Sounders FC visits Costa Rica's CD Saprissa on September 14 and RSL hosts Canadian champion Toronto FC on September 15.
Seattle returns to MLS play on September 19 at Columbus. The two sides will meet again 16 days later in the U.S. Open Cup Final on October 5. Tickets for that match go on sale on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT.
