# Alex Brown, Saints. This guy’s not going to come up and suddenly put up huge numbers, but he’s going to be a nice upgrade over the inconsistent Charles Grant. Look back at Brown’s time with Chicago. His numbers were very steady. He’ll put some heat on the passer from time to time. His sack numbers never have been spectacular, but he disrupts a lot of passes. He’s always going to play the run well.
# Kroy Biermann, Falcons. This guy’s getting a lot of hype because he’s had a sack in each of the first three preseason games and Dimitroff and Smith are convinced Biermann’s ready for a breakout season. There are some other talent evaluators around the league that think Biermann doesn’t have all that much upside. But I’m going to take the word of Smith and Dimitroff and trust what I saw out of Biermann in camp and the preseason and give him a high ranking.
# Greg Hardy, Panthers. This guy’s been getting tons of preseason hype and some fans are comparing him to Peppers. That’s a stretch. But I’ve been told by the Panthers and people who’ve been watching Hardy from a distance that this guy’s for real -- as long as he can keep focused on football.
# Tyler Brayton, Panthers. We’ll twist a common phrase from coach John Fox and say Brayton is what he is. That’s a pretty solid all-around defensive end. In a lot of ways, he’s a lot like New Orleans’ Brown. # Lawrence Sidbury, Falcons. We’ll jump back to projecting here. Sidbury didn’t do much as a rookie, but Ravens jersey

In Atlanta’s defensive-line rotation, where it doesn’t really matter who starts, Davis is going to get a lot of playing time. He’s good against the run and isn’t a bad pass rusher, although his lack of height sometimes keeps him from really disrupting passes.
# Stylez G. White, Buccaneers. He’s the best Tampa Bay has right now. The Bucs have tried to light a fire under him in the preseason by publicly questioning his practice efforts. They’re also disappointed he hasn’t stepped forward at all as a leader of a very young defensive line. But White’s never been a great practice player and has been reasonably productive in the regular season.
# Jamaal Anderson, Falcons. No doubt this guy has been a huge bust as a defensive end and maybe you can’t even call him a defensive end anymore. He started rotating inside last year and could get even more work at tackle this year. This guy’s not going to give you any pass rush from the outside, but he can play the run.
# Kyle Moore, Buccaneers. He seems to have landed the starting spot opposite White. Part of that is because Moore’s been decent, but part of it is because the Bucs have no one else who is ready.
# Bobby McCray, Saints. New Orleans let him go after last season and brought him back at a reduced salary. There’s no guarantee he’ll make the regular-season roster. McCray’s a guy that’s supposed to be a pass-rush specialist in a rotation. He ended up starting a lot in place of Grant last year and produced 1.5 sacks. Maybe, in the right situation, McCray can be a pass-rush specialist, but he’s never really lived up Falcons jersey

# Michael Bennett, Buccaneers. This guy’s unknown and undersized, but he’s had some flashes as a pass rusher in the preseason. He could be used in a rotation as a situational pass rusher. Germantown — There were high expectations for the 2009 Germantown baseball team, but a great many things went wrong, leading to a disappointing season.
Chief among those difficult things were the "Tommy John" elbow surgery that took out ace pitcher Tyler Thicke for the entire summer and the frightening, almost fluke on-field injury that almost cost shortstop Jordan Infield one of his kidneys when he accidently elbowed himself diving for a pop-up.
As a result of football jerseys those unfortunate incidents, Thicke, with his elbow braced and hinged at an awkward 90-degree angle, and Infield, with a carefully placed pad covering his still healing kidney, had a lot of time to sit and talk in the dugout over that long summer.

It's especially unbelievable for Thicke, the great promising athlete, the four-year letter-winner, who threw a five-inning no-hitter at Grafton as a freshman in 2007. He still had the Division 1 scholarship offer (contingent on performance) from Indiana in his pocket, but he didn't know how the summer of 2010 would go since his elbow was still recovering.
Slow, steady progress
Coach Parrish Wagner, himself a former pitcher, was going to play it cautiously with Thicke. The only promise about when he would pitch this summer, was "the first game of regionals."
It turned out to be a little more than that, but only a little more, as Thicke had to get comfortable on the mound again. It was one inning a week, then three, then five.
"Everything was going so slowly," said Thicke. "One inning here; two innings there. I'd tell him (Wagner), 'I'm ready, I'm ready,' but he built me up slowly and, as it turned out, perfectly. All I have now is a little soreness, which I expected."
Thicke won that Steelers jersey regional game for Germantown, 4-3, over Sussex Hamilton on July 20.
But with Thicke never having thrown more than once a week all summer, Wagner remained cagey about when the star lefty would throw in the all-important sectional.
The heavy rains that flooded many in the area July 22 helped Wagner out in that regard as they had one beneficial effect. They postponed the sectional that Germantown was hosting by a day, allowing Thicke to come back on a somewhat normal three days rest as opposed to the short, two days rest that would have been the normal schedule.
"All I knew," Wagner said, "was that he was going to get the ball. I just didn't know when."
But he still would be pitching for the second time in a week for the first time all summer.
Keller comes up big
And there wouldn't have been any second time for Thicke had it not been for sophomore Brian Keller.
Keller, who started the year on junior varsity before a call-up three weeks into the varsity season, and who still didn't have his name listed on the Germantown sectional roster, was Wagner's gambler's choice to throw the sectional semifinal earlier in the day against Slinger.
"I have a great deal of confidence in Brian," Wagner said.
And Keller bore that confidence out. Nerves got to Keller and the Warhawks in the first inning, with two errors and the only two runs of the game for the Owls.
But Keller persevered, shutting out the Owls (17-13) the rest of the way, putting down 15 in a row at one point as the Warhawks, not known for their stellar defense all season, suddenly made play after play behind him. Wagner could not stop talking about the effort of senior first baseman Tony Farrand, who had assists or putouts on at least 12 plays in the game.
Germantown tied the score in the seventh on a Jimmy Doedens sacrifice fly and won it in the eighth on an Eric Brown single over a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded.
"This feels great," said Keller. "I had Chargers jersey such good help from my team behind me, and I have a lot of confidence in my defense now. My job is to just throw strikes and then let them do the work."
With that victory and Keller's effort, the Warhawks now had their best chance at beating their high-powered rivals to the south, Menomonee Falls (33-11), the sectional's top seed, in order to earn their first state tournament berth since 1986.

Old coach revels in Warhawks unlikely trip
Long retired Germantown baseball coach Chuck Ritzenthaler was just about out the door last Sunday, heading toward a senior league game he was about to pitch (yup, that's right), when he was informed that his former team had pulled off a small miracle and was advancing to the state tournament.
"Isn't that cool?" said the 30-plus-year coaching veteran wistfully. "What an exciting experience for those kids."
And that brought back memories of nfl jerseys the Warhawks' only other trip to state in 1986 for the old coach, which was earned at Menomonee Falls' Trenary Field with a win over Brookfield East.
"I remember we came back to school (after sectional) and we all jumped in the pool," he said with a laugh, knowing that that's not possible now, as the school pool has been gone for several years now.
And there are a few other sweet tie-ins for Ritzenthaler when it comes to this state berth. First of all, it was earned on the Warhawks' Dream Field, a place that Ritzenthaler invested a lot of sweat, time, effort and promise in helping build 15 years ago that also bears his name.
He would have been proud of Saturday's effort put in by the groundskeeping staff, headed up by Athletic Director Jack Klebesadel, after the sectional was postponed by a day due to Thursday's downpours. Then a little more rain was added Friday night to compound their problems.
There was standing water everywhere Saturday morning, and start times for the games kept getting pushed back while the volunteers raked, blow-dried and otherwise hastened the water's departure from the field.
NOW reporter Tom Skibosh, who was covering the Menomonee Falls-Brookfield Central semifinal, said that people were still out there blow-drying the baselines five minutes before game time.
First time for Wagner
Ritzenthaler sent out hearty congratulations to sixth-year coach Parrish Wagner on his first state trip as either a coach or a player.
Neither Parrish nor his older brother, Paul, a former Major League pitcher for several years, made it to state with a Germantown team. Paul was just a year or two ahead of the 1986 team, and Parrish was a couple of years too young for that squad.

Browns create ring of honor for past greats

“I’m hopeful that he’ll be there,” Holmgren said Thursday at a news conference attended by Hall of Famers Paul Warfield and Joe DeLamielleure. “Jim Brown is synonymous with the Cleveland Browns. It’s going to be a great celebration for all of us and the 16 families, and I trust he’ll be part of that. He’s going to holler back at me.”
Speaking to WSKO, a sports radio station in Syracuse, N.Y., Brown wouldn’t say if would attend the ceremony or not. “I’m a very sensitive person. I do like to be respected. I’m very loyal. I like it to be a two-way street,” he said.
