Phillies Notes: Catcher Hoover to get call

LOS ANGELES - Paul Hoover will be the first of what is expected to be a handful of September call-ups to boost the Phillies' roster during a pennant race.
Hoover, a catcher, will be the lone player to be added to the team as major-league rosters officially expand Wednesday. Hoover will serve as the team's third catcher.
In recent weeks, Charlie Manuel has pinch-hit for his starting catcher (whether it be Carlos Ruiz or Brian Schneider) during games, so it's not a stretch to say Hoover might be needed at some point. But mainly, he'll provide emergency insurance.

"Hoover caught a little bit more in spring training," Manuel said. "That was really close. Both did a really good job when they were up here. I feel like we know Hoover just a little bit more. We didn't need two. That was real close."
In six games with the Phillies earlier this season, Hoover hit .278 with two doubles and two RBIs. The 34-year-old catcher has played seven seasons in the majors.
Hoover left triple-A Lehigh Valley with an eight-game hitting streak and was hitting .385 in his last 12 games. In 77 games with the IronPigs, he hit .247 with two home runs and 21 RBIs.
Hoover was also a call-up last season. He had the game-winning single on the final day of the season in 2009, a 7-6 win over the Marlins.
The Phillies are likely to make a few more moves when the team returns home Friday. Greg Dobbs, who has struggled all season while being designated for assignment twice, will be one of those players.
One of the starters for Monday's doubleheader against Florida also will come from the minor leagues.

Since he departed Philadelphia after the 2007 season, Barajas is hitting .514 (18 for 35) with eight home runs and 19 RBIs in 11 games against the Phils. That's a 1.314 slugging percentage.
His eighth bomb came off Roy Halladay on Monday night.
"I knew he had some," Manuel said. "I didn't know he had that many."
Barajas has 34 home runs in 297 games against everyone else. He has cemented his status as Phillie killer.
Is there an explanation?
"My best answer for that," Manuel said, "probably would be we're due to get him out."
Injury updates Ross Gload (strained right groin) will begin his rehab assignment for single-A Clearwater on Wednesday. He is expected to play two games, and if all goes well, he'll be activated Friday when he is eligible to come off the disabled list.
Righthander Danys Baez (back spasms) is also in Clearwater and did some long tossing Monday. He will continue his throwing program.
Extra bases The Phillies will send at least seven prospects to the Arizona Fall League. Righthanders Tyson Brummett, Justin De Fratus, Chris Kissock, B.J. Rosenberg, Josh Zeid, catcher Tim Kennelly and first baseman Matt Rizzotti will play for manager Mark Parent (who manages single-A Lakewood). There is also an eighth Buffalo Bills jersey
to-be-announced spot for an outfielder. . . . Righthander Austin Hyatt was named Florida State League pitcher of the year. Hyatt was 11-5 with a 3.04 ERA along with 156 strikeouts and 35 walks for single-A Clearwater. The 15th-round pick in 2009 has since been promoted to double-A Reading, where he is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in four starts.
